  Rollerball (2002): Reviews
Rollerball was trash even back in 1975, but in some small way it was ahead of its time.
As in the comparatively quaint original film, there are whiffs of greed, carnage, social upheaval and the triumph of the numskull, but it's all rendered noxious nonsense by zooming hot rods, vague T&A, irritating jump-cuts and a bunch of dipshit Power Ranger wannabes slamming in hell's moshpit.
Rollerball pushes the Hollywood action movie to stratospheric new levels of incoherence; pounding at the senses, it's mashed story, character, time and space into a chunky hash.

What it didn't have was the confidence of MGM, who pushed the release of the film into the doldrums of the new year and presided over the cutting of the only two possible reasons (the nudity and the gore) that anyone would have for seeing the film in the first place.
Structurally, the film (like its predecessor, oddly enough) is just an excuse to string together a lot of ridiculous action with stunningly dull exposition.
To that end, rollerball is what it might look like if Vince McMahon were to direct "Starlight Express" (with all the stage blood, testosterone, and suck such a union implies).

The original “Rollerball” from 1975 is an all-time classic, a thought-provoking movie with a powerful message that also happens to be highlighted by some of the best sporting sequences ever put to film.
This 2002 remake of “Rollerball”, on the other hand, is an incredibly disappointing train wreck where the sporting sequences are almost impossible to get into and the message has been watered and dumbed down to the point of shooting itself in the foot with its obviousness.
Even story-oriented suspense is out of the question, because unlike the original “Rollerball”, which challenged the audience to think about what it had to say and made the viewer discover the film’s overall message for him or herself, this flick takes every opportunity to spell it all out right from the get-go.

As a film that's central focus is supposed to be it's sporting action you would have thought that each Rollerball clash would have been the highlight of the film in the same way that the boxing was in Rocky or the car racing was in Days of Thunder.

From the opening scene to the last, the film is a 99-minute music video where hard rock and heavy metal unrelentingly blast on the soundtrack, drowning out some of the dialogue exchanges (when you're lucky) and without a care in the world for the actual plot.
The three key Rollerball sequences admittedly have the potential to be alluring and entertaining in a trashy way, but in molding the final film into a PG-13 rating, they are so haphazardly edited that it is but a jumble of images that don't seem to add up into a whole.
The screenplay for "Rollerball," by Larry Ferguson and John Pogue, is such a sloppy one (with some real dialogue howlers) that the studio exec who bought it must have been under a heavy dosage of hallucinogens.

As for ROLLERBALL (2002), it is ultimately just another attempt to milk the teenage audience cash cow, who (according to the marketing execs anyway) want loud Nu-Metal, extreme sports, and video game action.
All is not well with Rollerball, however, as the corrupt team owner Alexis Petrovich (Jean Reno) and his evil cohorts are sabotaging the sport in an attempt to raise ratings so that he can secure a lucrative American cable deal.
But ultimately, while the original ROLLERBALL will retain its cult classic status for many years to come for both its intelligence and audacity, the lackluster remake will quickly fade and be forgotten.
