Rollo Howard Beck (1870 - 1950) was a U.S. ornithologist and explorer.
In 1920 Beck and his wife Ida set off on a voyage across the Pacific to collect bird specimens for the American Museum of Natural History.
The Becks returned to the United States in 1929 with over 40,000 bird skins and a large anthropological collection.

 Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Captain Tootsie
Toots came out of the comic art studio of C.C. Beck, co-creator of the original Captain Marvel (whom Toots somewhat resembled, except for his blond hair).
Beck's main assistant, Pete Costanza, also had a hand in the character's creation.
Beck didn't have a direct hand in all of Captain Tootsie's dozens, if not hundreds of adventures (particularly those two 1950 issues where Toots was the title character), but he's the one who set the visual tone for the series.

 The Pacific Voyages of Rollo Beck
Born in Los Gatos, California in 1870, Rollo Beck was an ornithologist who spent much of his professional life traveling throughout the world collecting bird specimens for research institutions.
The Rollo Beck collection alone comprises of nearly five hundred objects as well as a large collection of ethnographic photographs taken by Beck during his Pacific expeditions in the 1920's.
Beck's photos show many of the objects found in our collection either in use or in the manufacturing process.

In his own words, Beck was on Guadalupe Island only a "short time." On one afternoon he saw a single flock of 11 Guadalupe Caracaras, of which he shot 9.
Of course I'm not going to argue that Beck was justified in shooting 9 individuals out of the 11 that he saw (regardless of whether they were literally the last 11 or not), nor deny that he, nor some other collectors *of his time*, made some "serious errors in judgement".
Beck in 1900 was much closer in time to the people who all but exterminated the bison, and sought to do the same to Native Americans, than he is to the thoughts and practices of our generations.

Rollo Beck (1870-1950), the godfather of Monterey Bay birding, was a turn-of-the-century adventurer, scientist and world traveler who amassed one of ornithology’s most important collections as he helped prove some of Charles Darwin’s controversial theories.

Rollo Beck, an ornoithologist and collector of museum specimens, took part in the Whitney expedition to Oceania in the 1920s.
The petrel which bears his name is known only from two specimens: a female taken at sea east of New Ireland and north of Buka, Papua New Guinea, on 6 January 1928; and a male taken north-east of Rendova, Solomon Islands, on 18 May 1929.
Beck's Petrel was not one of those 15 species, as the possible recent sightings in the Bismarck Archipelago and Solomon Islands weighed in its favour.

Matt James, Geology, was invited to give the keynote address at the opening of a new permanent exhibit at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History on the life and work of the renowned bird collector Rollo Beck (1870-1950).
The Museum organized "Rollo Beck Days" from April 21-24, 2006, to commemorate the accomplishments of Beck, who participated in numerous natural history collecting expeditions from 1897 to 1929.
Beck was the leader of the 1905-06 Galapagos expedition from the California Academy of Sciences.

A passage from Beck's field notes reads, "The natives of Takaroa, like those of Manahi find their dogs useful when going on the reef fishing.
The ground stone poi pounder pictured above was collected by Beck in the Marquesas and represents only one of a variety of shapes.

I don’t want to insinuate that this is a big mess of experimentation, because the truth is, there is a fair amount of solid song hooks that tip the hat to the Beatles and a sensibility that allows the band to fuse genres together with ease like that of Beck.
This work, to me, is more representative of the latter Beatles phase, when psychedelia kept them off of the road and in the studio, producing some of their best work.

This opening marks the beginning of Rollo Beck Days, a three-day event celebrating the renowned field ornithologist’s contributions to museum collections and the field of avian science.
Beck led California Academy of Sciences’1906 expedition to the Galapagos Islands, and the specimens collected during this expedition formed the core of the institution’s collections after the April 1906 fire storm destroyed the Academy.
