 2004 Rolls-Royce 100EX Centenary Experimental Car
While the design of the 100EX and the choice of its special construction materials resonate strongly with Rolls-Royce tradition, both its aesthetic qualities and its technological content place it squarely in the 21st century.
"Visually we wanted to build on the Rolls-Royce tradition of 'waftability', the sense that 100EX has the power to whisk its passengers swiftly to maximum speed in a truly relaxed manner."
(from Rolls-Royce Press Release) The 100EX is the first Experimental Car to be produced by Rolls-Royce Motor Cars since BMW Group became the custodians of the marque in 1998 and launched the all-new Phantom at the company's new home in Goodwood in January 2003.

 Maybach 2004 Rolls-Royce 100EX Press Conference
That's not to say that some elements of 100EX might appear on future models - which of course we are considering - but this car has been produced, foremost, to celebrate this wonderful moment in Rolls-Royce history - it's 100 year anniversary.
So impressed was Rolls, both with the motor car and with Henry Royce himself, that he immediately agreed that the two should join forces - and so one of the greatest names in automotive history was born.
And the history of Rolls-Royce is a truly glorious one, encompassing world speed records on land, on water and in the air, patronage by royal families, and heads of state, actors, sports figures, artists, and captains of industry.

 Geneva 2004 - Rolls-Royce 100EX Concept - Automobile Magazine
The first Rolls concept since the British automaker was taken over by BMW in 1998, it commemorates the 100th birthday of Rolls this May. "EX" stands for experimental, Rolls-Royce's traditional nomenclature for what we now know as a concept car.
There are no plans to produce the 100EX at this time, but obviously Rolls is aware that it needs more offerings and that the long-running Corniche was one of its most popular models in the U.S., an important market.
Rolls claims that rear-seat passengers are as well-cossetted as they are in the Phantom, especially since the doors are hinged at the rear, easing ingress and egress.

Will Rolls Drop The Top? - Forbes.com
Last week, BMW's Rolls-Royce subsidiary introduced the experimental 100EX convertible at the Geneva International Motor Show.
Marek Djordjevic, Rolls' chief stylist for exterior design, said in a statement about the 100EX that "the overall impression in intended to be of an elegant motor yacht at speed." To underline this nautical theme, generous amounts of real wood have been used in the design of the prototype.
Rolls says it is not planning to put the 100EX into production, but the company is likely to incorporate elements from it into a next-generation convertible.

BBC NEWS Business Rolls-Royce plans convertible future
The news had been expected after Rolls-Royce touted its 100EX convertible concept car at motorshows throughout the year to promote the marque's centenary.
The two-door, four-seat convertible, codenamed RR02, will share the Phantom's 6.75 litre V12 engine and it will be based on the same engineering principles, although its design will be closer to the 100EX concept car Rolls developed to celebrate its centenary this year.
Sales of the Phantom, the first Rolls-Royce built by BMW, have yet to take off and the company has seen the departure of two chief executives in just five months.

 ITV Motoring - Rolls-Royce Experimental
Henry Royce himself mulled over the idea of a sixteen-cylinder engine before settling on a V12 for the Phantom III of the 1930s.
It comes as no surprise that the 100EX will not progress to production status, although various elements of the design, construction and equipment may well percolate through to showroom models of the future.
Now the sixteen-cylinder theme has come back, because the 100EX is powered by a nine-litre V16 engine which, understandably enough, has no need of turbocharging.

Rolls-Royce 100EX 2005 Detroit Auto Show Preview AutoSite Auto Shows
Rolls-Royce 100EXRolls-Royce recently announced its intention to build a convertible for the 2007 model year, and the 100EX concept that originally debuted at the 2004 Geneva Auto Salon provides an early look at the Phantom-based droptop.
The Rolls-Royce 100EX shares with the Phantom its aluminum space frame, air-sprung suspension, and steering system.
Under the 100EX’s hulking hood resides a 9.0-liter, V16 engine, and the 100EX rides on giant 21-inch wheels and tires, but a production car would probably share the Phantom’s ultra-smooth V12 and 20-inch Michelin PAX run-flat tires.
