Rolls Royce went away from this idea and pursued their own ideas of small jet engines for vertical lift which was later demonstrated by Short SCI aircraft and so finished a small part of Rolls Royce history in the new jet age.
By this time Rolls Royce were beginning to put into practice some of the new theories of radiator and subsequent pipe work had to be built into the installations and streamlined to create as little drag as possible.
The results of these tests had shown that Rolls Royce had been justified in taking this step to do their own flight development but they were still having to rely on other people to carry it out.

 Rolls-Royce Derwent - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Derwent was the second jet engine design to be put into production by Rolls-Royce.
Rolls had a fully developed supercharger division, which Hooker directed, which was naturally suited to jet engine work.
The Derwent was the primary engine of all the early Meteors with the exception of the small number of Welland-equipped models which were quickly removed from service.

The eighth, with Rolls-Royce W.2B/37 Derwent Is, was flown on 18 April 1944.
Derwent 8 turbojets of 1633 kg (3,600 lbs) thrust were installed, to confer a top speed of almost 966 km/h (600 mph).
The Trent was basically a Derwent engine provided with reduction gearing and a drive shaft that turned a five-bladed Rotol propeller of 2.41 m (7 ft 11 in) diameter, necessitating the introduction of longer-stroke landing gear to provide tip clearance.

Derwent Brass hail from Derbyshire and were formed in 1992 by a small group of brass players who shared the determination to try and bring first class banding to the area.
Members of the Derby based Derwent Brass under the baton of MD Keith Leonard, and the Grand Central Chorus, received a standing ovation at the end of a concert in Queens Hall Derby.

The NF.11 retained the Derwent 8 engines of the F.8, but the four cannon were transferred from the nose to the wings, the wings were lengthened back to the original Meteor I span, and the longer nose accommodated AI.10 (US SCR-720) radar and a pressurized tandem cockpit.
The Derwent 5 was first bench-tested in June 1945, with the test engine providing 11.8 kN (1,200 kgp / 2,650 lbf) thrust.
If it were not for the heaviness of its ailerons and the consequent poor maneuverability in the rolling plane, and the adverse effect of snaking on it as a gun platform, it would be a comparable all-round fighter with greatly increased performance.

 Gloster Meteor Record Breakers
It was this in conjunction with the new and much more powerful Rolls Royce Derwent V that led to thoughts of capturing the world air speed record set by Germany in 1939 in addition to forming the basis of the F. MK IV Meteor.
In both the F. Mk 1 and III Meteors the Derwent engines were housed in short stubby nacelles, it was discovered though that extending them both in front and behind the wing improved the airflow and greatly reduced drag which increased sea level speed by almost 60 mph.
In addition to the airframe modifications the Derwent V had been cleared to an emergency rating of 4,300 lbs at 15,200 rpm against the normal maximum of 14,700 rpm boosting thrust by 800 lbs to 4,300 lbs.

 Gloster Meteor Development History
Stanley Hooker, in charge of the Rolls-Royce design team that was developing the Derwent visited the United States in the spring of 1944.
Power Jets was not in a position to mass produce the engine and early mis-management by the British Ministry of Production led to long delays until Rolls Royce took over the development of the W.2B from Rover in an exchange involving a Nottingham tank factory.
Discovering that General Electric was developing turbojet engines with thrust ratings of 1,800 kilograms (4,000 pounds) or higher Hooker returned to Britain and initiated a fast track project to build a new and much more powerful centrifugal-flow engine.

 Slightly OT- Rolls Royce Nene- - Scale Models
Rolls named their piston engines after birds of prey; Merlin, Eagle, Kestrel, etc. Their turbine engines are named after rivers; Trent, Adour, Conway, etc.
Bristol used mythological names for their engine; Centarus, Perseus, etc. Rolls picked up those engines in the consolidation of the British aero industry in the 60's and 70's.
Something hit me out of the blue just now- I always had heard that RR jets were named after rivers mainly.

During 1944 the Meteor's prime responsibility was to combat the V1 flying bomb, before moving to the continent in the ground attack role.
Because the Meteor, (as the new jet fighter was soon to be called) was a leap into the unknown the airframe was of conservative and simple design, the only novel feature being the use of a nosewheel undercarriage.
It is still on the military register and is the oldest military jet still flying.

When the Derwent V was developed, it incorporated so many changes in design that it was virtually a new engine.
In April 1944 it went through flight tests in a Meteor rated at 1800lbs thrust and with a weight of 920lbs.
