Contrary to popular belief, the Griffon was not an enlarged development of the Merlin, nor was the Merlin a development of the famous "R" engine of Schnieder trophy fame in 1931.
The Griffon I, a derated version of the R, was first run in 1933, the same year as the first Merlin prototype, and can trace its roots back to the Buzzard engine of 1925.
The Griffon II did not appear until 1939, and was a major redesign of the Mk I, all subsequent marks following this design.

The Griffon was designed to be retro-fitted into existing Merlin powered aircraft, but in the case of the Spitfire, that task turned out to be quite an engineering feat, requiring a hefty re-design of everything forward of the firewall.
The Griffon, popularly thought to be a development of the Merlin, was in fact derived from the R-Type racing powerplant (it should be noted however, the Griffon project incorporated much knowledge "learned" during Merlin production).
The Griffon also had a firing order and valve timing different from the Merlin, giving the Griffon a growling exhaust note, as opposed to the sweet sound of the Merlin.

In late 1943 early 1944 it was suggested by Joe Smith that Supermarine develop a simple jet fighter based around the Spiteful's wing and using a new jet engine that was being proposed by Rolls-Royce and which would later become the Nene.
In late 1942 it was feared that the Spitfire wing's drag characteristics at high Mach numbers might become a limiting factor in increasing the aircraft's performance and so it was decided to produce a new laminar-flow wing for the Spitfire incorporating the latest thought on high-speed aerodynamics.
