Rolls-Royce Kestrel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Kestrel was a 700 hp (520 kW) V-12 aircraft engine from Rolls-Royce, their first cast-block engine and the pattern for most of their future piston-engine designs.
The Kestrel was built to maintain enough pressure to keep the boiling point at about 150 °C. The engine first shipped in 1927 at 450 hp (340 kW), which soon improved in the IB model to 525 hp (390 kW).
Increased availablity of higher octane fuels in the late 1930s allowed the engine to be boosted to higher power levels without suffering from ping, and the Kestrel eventually topped out at 1,050 hp (780 kW) in the XXX model of 1940.

Rolls-Royce Peregrine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was essentially a "rationalized" version of their Rolls-Royce Kestrel, which had seen widespread use.
Rolls' internal project to "fill in the gap" between the Peregrine and Vulture resulted in the Rolls-Royce Merlin, which as a more attractive competitor annihilated any demand for the smaller, less powerful Peregrine.
The Peregrine was a 885hp liquid-cooled V-12 aircraft engine designed by Rolls Royce in the early 1930s.

The History of ROLLS ROYCE at HUCKNALL
Rolls Royce went away from this idea and pursued their own ideas of small jet engines for vertical lift which was later demonstrated by Short SCI aircraft and so finished a small part of Rolls Royce history in the new jet age.
By this time Rolls Royce were beginning to put into practice some of the new theories of radiator and subsequent pipe work had to be built into the installations and streamlined to create as little drag as possible.
The results of these tests had shown that Rolls Royce had been justified in taking this step to do their own flight development but they were still having to rely on other people to carry it out.

Rolls-Royce Merlin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 700 horsepower (500 kW) Rolls-Royce Peregrine was an updated, supercharged development of their existing V-12, 22 litre Rolls-Royce Kestrel which had been used to great success in a number of 1930's designs.
Originally it had a grille from a Rolls Royce, but after complaints from them he had to change it.
In the 1960s John Dodd of Kent, England put a Merlin engine (some say it actually was a Rover built Rolls-Royce Meteor, which was a de-tuned Merlin without superchargers and with steel components replacing some aluminium ones) in a car called "The Beast".

Rolls-Royce Vulture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Peregrine (a supercharged Kestrel) was a fairly standard design (at first sight) with two cylinder banks arranged in a V form and with a displacement of 22 litres.
They were part of a program to develop power levels beyond that of the Merlin (1,100 hp, 820 kW in the early production versions) - a program that also resulted in creations like the Napier Sabre.

Miles Master - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When production of the Kestrel engine ceased, a new variant of the Master was designed to use the 870 hp (650 kW) air-cooled radial Bristol Mercury XX engine.
The M.9A Master I was based on the M.9 Kestrel trainer that was first demonstrated at the Hendon Airshow in July 1937 but never entered production.
It was a fast, strong and fully aerobatic aircraft and served as an excellent introduction to the high performance fighter aircraft of the day; the Spitfire and Hurricane.

Two of Rolls-Royce's three founding patrons, Royce and Johnson, were still alive, although Royce was an invalid whose energies had to be most carefully sustained and husbanded in an environment specially arranged for this purpose.
Johnson maintained a vigorous and forceful presence in the company's affairs, though he continued to be as self-effacing as ever, declining the knighthood which he was offered at the end of the war.

The machine was the Kestrel Trainer - forerunner of the famous Master range - and its production was a private venture by the Company, primarily to supply an instructional aircraft whose performance and characteristics approximated to those of the Hurricane and Spitfire single-seat fighters, then in limited production for the RAF.
A very small team of draughtsmen designed one of the cleanest and most efficient aeroplanes of the whole Miles series in just under a year during 1937, which was an outstanding achievement for the leisurely days of peace.

 The Junkers Ju87 Stuka
Looking very similar to the "Stuka' of the 1940's, the prototype had a fixed undercarriage and the gull-wing appearance and was powered by a Rolls-Royce Kestrel power plant and made its first flight in May 1935.
The first variant was the Ju87A-1 and had dive brakes added to the outer wings, the kestrel engine was replaced by a Jumo 210Ca 640 horsepower engine which drove a variable pitch three bladed propellor, and a single tail fin replaced the twin fins of the original design.
Where the Hs123 was a biplane, the Ju87, developed from the K47 was a single engined monoplane that differed from all previous Junkers aircraft in that it did not have the corrugated ribbed metal stressed skin appearance.

By 1932 it was becoming apparent to Rolls-Royce that their best-selling engine, the 21.2 litre 745HP Kestrel was coming towards the end of its development life.
