 Robert Silverberg:  Roma Eterna
The ten tales which make up this world have now been collected in a book entitled Roma Eterna, which allows those without access to the varied magazines and books which contained the original stories to read them, and those with access to those volumes to have all the stories in a single, chronologically ordered volume.
Spanning a period of nearly 1500 years (from AD 449 to AD 1970), the stories tell of the continuation of the Roman empire as it discovers the new world and various technologies, facing trials never faced by the actual Roman empire (or its Byzantine successor).
One of the strengths of the various stories in Roma Eterna is the exploration they allow Silverberg of historiography, rather than the specifics of the world.

The SF Site Featured Review: Roma Eterna
Talking about it from the point of view of a character who is a complete outsider and has not borne witness to any of it is remarkably uninvolving.
The only story in Roma Eterna which I felt was truly unique is the last one, "To the Promised Land." Paradoxically, although it takes place in the same world as the rest, the tale is NOT directly a story of Rome -- and perhaps this is what makes it different.
He is a storytelling master and an elder in the field -- but somehow the overwhelming urge about this book is not to sit up all night to finish it with breathless anticipation, but more to put it down and pick it up later...

He unifies his narrative with unusual but convincing historical theory: that Roma's vaunted religious tolerance, in turning the sacred into a mere instrument of governance, had sown the seeds of revolution-a spiritual and intellectual upheaval that here leads the children of Israel to a second and glorious trek to the stars.
The rest is history (at least alternative) as key global events fostered by ROMA ETERNA starting in A.U.C. 405 our time) into the next fifteen centuries occur as the Roman Empire ebbs and grows.
Given its origin, "Roma Eterna" is not so much a novel as a series of sometimes interrelated, more or less grand tableaux of incidents in the history of Roman civilization continuing unbroken to contemporary times.

Roma Eterna by Robert Silverberg - an infinity plus review
When I picked up Roma Eterna for review, I had the passing thought, "Oh, no, another alternate history." What I got far surpassed my expectations and gave me a new appreciation for a well established author (as well as that sharp kick in the gut).
Roma Eterna has a smooth flow, a logical progression, and a satisfying conclusion.
So much to enjoy for one book, and, for those who have yet to read Silverberg's plethora of works, a charming way to be introduced to a legendary author.

Basically a seried of vignettes, not a cohesive story at all, Roma Eterna falls victim to a couple of mistaken assumptions.
"Roma Eterna" is a collection of 10 different short stories masquerading as a novel, that raises some tantalizing questions to answer the central, overarching question in this book: What if the Roman Empire never fell, but not only survived, but endured to the present as the foremost empire on the globe?
It is not Silverberg's best work of fiction (His finest works include early novels such as "Shadrach in the Furnace" and his critically acclaimed series, "The Majipoor Chronicles" which began with "Lord Valentine's Castle".), and yet remains a compelling collection of tales which should interest alternative history fans.
