  The Language of the Roma
The Romani language, even though it is now comprised of a number of different dialects, belongs to the family of Indo-European languages in a group that includes other languages of Indian origin, such as Hindi and Bengali.
Due to the diaspora of individual groups of Roma, there are a number of main dialects of the Romani language, although Roma from different parts of the world are able to understand one another.
This vocabulary is unstable and is often replaced by words from a new contact language, in the case of Slovak Roma living in the Czech Republic, from the Czech language.

Roma communities throughout Europe suffer systematic racial discrimination.1 Their language and culture has been marginalized, with schooling that is insensitive to the best interests of the child, hostile to the Roma language and culture, and with Roma children facing prejudice from classmates and teachers.
Current research on linguistics shows that when a child's first language is valued and recognized, their ability to learn a second language is enhanced.11 Often Roma children are caught in a vicious circle; schools fail to support the language they use at home and their skills in this language are poor.
A better option is education in the dominant language, with some education in the first language and on Roma culture.

In the discussion on the use of minority languages, the Committee noted the government's increasing support for the electronic and print media of national minorities as well as the minority-language programmes on public television and radio, although relatively little broadcasting time is devoted to radio programmes in the Roma language.
The Committee noted that there are legislative provisions aimed at protecting the right of members of national minorities to use their first names in their language and to have it recognised; however, there have been reports that the Slovak form of a surname is still imposed in some instances on women belonging to national minorities.
