Romaldo (Aldo) Giurgola (born September 2, 1920, Rome, Italy) is an Italian-American-Australian academic architect, professor, and author.
Giurgola was educated at the University of Rome La Sapienza, received a master's degree in architecture from Columbia University, and has been a partner in Philadelphia firm Mitchell/Giurgola Architects since 1958.
The design was consonant with a certain aesthetic preoccupation with aviation, flight, technology and space travel of the time, the same Zeitgeist that produced Saarinen's TWA Terminal at Kennedy International Airport.

Giurgola studied in his native Italy before moving to the USA, where he gained his MA at Columbia.
That year Giurgola was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, and MGT Architects opened an office in Sydney.
In 1990 Giurgola’s second notable Canberra building, the modest St Thomas Aquinas Church in Charnwood, won the RAIA’s Canberra Medallion.

A competition was held to design a new multistory building to wrap around the rear of the Octagon.
Romaldo Giurgola, FAIA, 1982 Gold Medal recipient, won the competition, but his design was turned down by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
It became clear that it was not possible to execute his design within the space.

After the short and vital but stormy tenure of Charles Colbert (1960—1963), Kenneth A. Smith, an engineer, was appointed dean, and in 1965 the School was organized along divisional lines, with planning and architecture each having its own chairperson.
Charles Abrams was the first planning chair and Romaldo Giurgola the first for architecture.
Giurgola built upon the design strengths of Kouzmanoff and Goodman, bringing into the studios as first-time teachers such bright young architects as Gio Pasanella, Jacquelin Robertson, Robert Kliment, and Ada Karmi Melamede.

Delivering a lecture on his creation yesterday, the Italian-born and educated architect recalled Sir John Overall, who was a key figure in Canberra's development, walking into his New York office out of the blue and asked him to help judge a competition to design a new parliament building.
Mr Giurgola, who has lived in Canberra since 1991, revealed his design was inspired by Australian literature and poetry - and shaped by its difficult location atop a round hill.
