Abt, Roman Abt Railway   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Roman Abt was chief engineer of a mountain railway firm founded by Niklaus Riggenbach in 1875.
Abt devised an improved form of rack involving an upright steel plate (known as a blade) into which the rack slots were machined.
Most Abt rack railways have two rows of blades along the sleepers, the blades being bolted on each side of a steel spacer which holds them the right distance apart and which in turn is bolted to the sleepers.

The Abt system was devised by Roman Abt, a Swiss locomotive engineer working for a Riggenbach-equipped line, as an improved rack system.
Two or three parallel sets of Abt rack plates are used, with a corresponding number of driving pinions on the locomotive, to ensure that at least one pinion tooth is always engaged securely.
The Abt system section of 1.5 km with maximum gradient of 9% is in Igawa Line, re-laid from adhesion line on 2 October 1990, due to Nagashima Dam construction.
