Moving crisply through the reportoire of Smith, Roman Candle is full of regret and the kind of social snobbery we all experience from time to time "Everyone has gone/ Home to oblivion" he crackles on No Name #3 (used on the Good Will Hunting Soundtrack).
Roman Candle is a stark, quiet, beautiful record and is probably Elliott's equivalent of Nick Drake's Pink Moon in that it is so minimalistic in production, mostly just acoustic guitar and vocals.
This, his first solo album, is neither as smooth nor accomplished as any of the subsequent albums, particularly Figure 8 which is as slick as an oil accident.

Roman Candle is no exception, being his first (solo) album it’s a fantastic collection of heart-felt acoustic based lullabies.
Releasing such classic albums as “Either/Or” and “XO” Elliott was on the track to superstardom until his death in 2003.

 Roman Candle
Roman Candle is a very little record, the kind of thing you’re always hoping you’ll be the first person to notice so that you can feel like you have it all to yourself.
With the exception of a stray traps kit here and there or an occasional harmonica, it’s an album made up entirely of acoustic guitar and voice, though no song has fewer than two guitars and the all of the vocals are double-tracked.
Such dynamics as there are occur at strategically placed moments throughout the album; there are perhaps two such moments, three at the outside.

The most amazing thing, and a testament to Elliott's songwriting genius, is that Elliott recorded the entire album under the stairs in an old house, and the songs were simply the most recent eight songs he had written.
It's a shame that more people were turned off of this album by sour critical reviews, as well as their own preconceptions and biases.

Roman Candle Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
"Roman Candle" is the first album Elliott released on his own, away from "Heatmiser", and it is easily his worst.
While it is raw, it shows just the smallest bit of potential, but not the type of potential that tells you something great is coming up, its the type of potential that tells you the man might crack the top 500 on the Billboard Music Charts.
"Roman Candle" shows the slighest bit of pop sensibility, and "Last Call" and "No Name #3" both echo the potential that "The Biggest Lie" brought to self-titled.

This album seems to have been spawned from the momentum of its brilliant predecessor Roman Candle.
Smith was well on his way to leaving his rock 'n' roll band Heatmiser, and surely the amazing artistic success of his first solo release enabled this album.

A far cry from Heatmiser's aggro attack, the album features hushed, folky tunes with lightly brushed drums, acoustic 12-string guitars and some pretty fingerpicking by Smith, whose hoarse whisper tells tales of disintegrating relationships sketched in elliptical yet pungent terms, like diary entries.
The second solo album improves greatly on the recipe.
Elliott Smith's songs, melodies, arrangements and production are all stronger and more fully realized than those on Roman Candle, although the record covers the same thematic territory-substance abuse, disappointment and his uniquely resigned defiance.
