The Archbishop of Vienna is the prelate of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna who is concurrently the metropolitan bishop of its ecclesiastical province which includes the dioceses of Eisenstadt, Linz and St.
The first bishop residing in Vienna was Georg von Slatkonia.
From 1861 to 1918, the archbishops, as members of the Herrenhaus, were represented in the Reichsrat of Cisleithania and bore the title of a Prince-Archbishop.

Groer, 83, died Sunday night of pneumonia at a hospital in St. Poelten, 40 miles west of Vienna, where he was being treated for cancer, the Archdiocese of Vienna announced yesterday.
Groer was cardinal of Vienna from 1986 until 1995, when allegations first surfaced that he had sexually molested students at an all-male Catholic boarding school in the early 1970s.

In an interview with the archdiocese of Vienna's newspaper, Sunday, the conservative prelate - who earlier this year had been mentioned as a possible candidate for pope - expressed joy but acknowledged the scandals that have rocked the church in Austria since he became cardinal.
The late Pope John Paul II appointed Schoenborn, 60, as Vienna's archbishop in October 1995 to replace Hans Hermann Groer, who was forced to resign amid allegations that he molested youths at a monastery in the 1970s.

Helmut Schueller, the Vienna Archdiocese's ombudsman for victims of sexual abuse, conceded that some believers feel betrayed and that the Austrian church's credibility is at stake.

He was part of a corps of Jesuits around the world preparing for possible missionary work in Russia in the event of the downfall of communism, and he was the first American Jesuit to be ordained in the United States as a priest of the Slavo-Byzantine rite.
