Archdiocese of Washington - About Us
From that humble beginning in St. Mary's County to the thriving, diverse Catholic community which exists today, the story of the Archdiocese of Washington is one of struggle, hope and faith.
Originally part of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the City of Washington was named a separate archdiocese by Pope Pius XII in 1939, under the direction of Baltimore's Archbishop Michael J. Curley.
In 1980, James A. Hickey, a native of Michigan, was appointed Archbishop of Washington.

Many Roman Catholics were hoping that Pope John Paul II would use his absolute power in such matters to declare the Virgin Mary a co-redeemer with Jesus Christ; 6 million Catholics, including 550 bishops and 42 cardinals, have signed petitions beseeching the Pope to do so, which effectively would make the Virgin a god.
The Roman Catholic church agreed to pay $1.2 million to a woman in Los Angeles who was sexually abused by a priest when she was a teenager; in New York a priest was charged with raping a child.
Roman Catholic officials from the Archdiocese of Cincinnati declared that priests who molest postpubescent minors are “ephebophiles” not “pedophiles” and as such they are more amenable to treatment and can sometimes be returned to the ministry.

Sex Abuse Settlement Reached - washingtonpost.com
But the victims in the Washington archdiocese were in a weaker legal position, because all of their potential claims were beyond the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits.
Susan Gibbs, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said it leaves the archdiocese facing only one outstanding sex abuse lawsuit, a claim filed by the family of a teenager who allegedly was abused in 2001 by the Rev. A.J. Cote, a Dominican priest who served at Mother Seton Church in Germantown until 2002.
According to Gibbs, the Washington archdiocese has spent $6 million on sex abuse cases, including the latest settlement, which she said will come from the archdiocese's self-insurance reserves, rather than from its operating budget or parish collections.

 The Catholic Church's Achilles' Heel
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington wholeheartedly supported the center, and many parishes and the Knights of Columbus gave it substantial annual donations.
It is a case that makes for bitter irony: the church's devotion to its ban on contraception-a teaching that has been roundly rejected by the overwhelming majority of American Catholics-has caused it to stop giving much needed care to women who choose not to have abortions.
While donations are severely curtailed, the almost 3,000 women who come every year to the center continue to need its services; the prenatal, postnatal and general health care, plus the baby clothes, cribs, diapers and baby food.
