The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (also known as the USCCB) is the official governing body of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States.
Founded in 1966 as the joint National Conference of Catholic Bishops and United States Catholic Conference, it is comprised of the American hierarchy of bishops, archbishops and cardinal archbishops.
As with all bishops' conferences, the decisions and acts of the USCCB must be approved by the Roman dicasteries, which are subservient to the immediate and absolute authority of the Pope.

LOS ANGELES (Map, News) - Orange County's Roman Catholic bishop testified that he was falsely accused of sexually molesting a male parishioner when he was a priest in Bakersfield decades ago, according to a deposition transcript made public Thursday.
Bishop Tod Brown testified earlier this week in a court-ordered deposition as part of an unrelated sexual abuse lawsuit that is scheduled for trial Sept. 18.
He said the bishop of the Diocese of Fresno, which included Bakersfield, called to say that a man was accusing Brown of molesting him in the late 1960s during confession and in catechism classes.

The dispute centers on a proposal to transfer control of the 236 Catholic colleges and universities in the United States from their boards of trustees to local bishops, rewriting the schools' charters to put them under Vatican law.

The U.S. Bishops agreed on a version of the document in late 1996, but the Vatican rejected it, sending it back a year later with a demand for tighter language to guarantee the bishops' control over the schools.

The bishops could set up an Inspector General of Catholic education charged with licensing all institutions who would call themselves "Catholic." The Church would have to set the standards, see to it that the standards are lived up to, and be empowered with granting an educational imprimatur on those educational institutions that qualified.

BY CARLA K. Bishop Joseph Imesch of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Joliet, who recently apologized for his handling of a sexual abuse case that allegedly took place in the diocese in the 1960s, has resigned because he is soon to turn 75, the Vatican announced Tuesday.
Sartain, a native of Memphis, Tenn., is the sixth bishop in the diocese of Little Rock's 163 years, leading Arkansas' 90,000 Catholics.
He became the third bishop of the Joliet Diocese on Aug. 28, 1979, after serving as auxiliary bishop of Detroit and regional bishop of the Northwest Region.
