  Bourget, Ignace
His vast diocese covered the area from the American border to James Bay and encompassed the 22 000 Roman Catholics of Montréal, 79 parishes, 34 mission churches and 4 Native missions; in all a population of 186 244 souls.
This failure, and the controversy surrounding ultramontane involvement in politics, led to Bourget's resignation as bishop of Montréal in September 1876.
The monument erected in Bourget's honour in the centre of the memorial chapel of bishops and archbishops of Montréal is a symbol of the role he played in the history of the diocese.

Bishop Grafton wrote to Archbishop Heykamp with the suggestion that Vilatte might be consecrated Abbot-Bishop of The Society of Precious Blood and suffragan bishop of Fond du Lac, but that this action would have to emanate from the church in the Netherlands and Vilatte would have to sent back to America by their mandate.
Bishop Grafton had managed to get hold of the property and though he said that "it was being held in trust for the Old Catholics'" when they needed the revenue, the bishop did not make the sources available.
Bishop Grafton started rumor that Vilatte was given a large sum of money from Ignatius, but a member of the community Calder-Marshall states that: "A small sum of money was pressed in the hands of the archbishop" In the same letter Bishop Grafton accuses Vilatte of being a drunkard.

Apostolic Succession in the Roman Catholic Church
Why so many bishops trace their lineages to this one bishop can be explained in great part by the intense sacramental activity of Pope Benedict XIII, who ordained 139 bishops during his episcopate and pontificate, including many cardinals, papal diplomats, and bishops of important dioceses who, in turn, ordained many other bishops.
However, there are several Eastern Catholic bishops who belong to the Rebiban succession and there are some Roman-rite bishops who belong to the Maronite and Chaldean lineages.
Ironically, if Pope Alexander VII had not been ill on the morning of Paluzzo Altieri`s consecration, more than ninety-two percent of living Roman Catholic bishops would trace their lineages back to Giuliano della Rovere instead of Scipione Rebiba, and ten other popes would be among the episcopal descendants of Pope Julius II.

As he has solemnly declared that we have misrepresented this Catholic doctrine, he should have proved from Holy Scripture, from the General Councils of the Church, and from the writings of the Fathers, that his assertion is true; for his anonymous authority is worth nothing.
In this way it often happens that a man, external to the Catholic Church, writes sermons and instructions, draws up and arranges devotions, or composes hymns which are faultless, or nearly so, which are the fruit, not of his own illuminated mind, but of his careful study, sometimes of his accurate translation, of Catholic originals.
