Roman Catholic priests are forbidden from telling anyone what they hear in confessions.
The Catholic Diocese of Las Vegas roundly opposed the bill, saying it would violate the sacred relationship between believers and their God.
Craig Walton, coordinator of the graduate program in ethics and policy studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said the church is one of many institutions that society no longer trusts to behave ethically.

Originally a part of the Dioceses of Sacramento and Salt Lake City and later the Diocese of Reno, Pope John Paul II established the diocese on March 21, 1995 and was canonically erected on June 28.

 Las Vegas SUN: Not all of diocese's funds go to poverty fight
Nearly 200 Roman Catholic dioceses nationwide receive no outside oversight over how they spend money that churchgoers donate in their parishes in order to fight poverty, church officials say.
In the Las Vegas Diocese, that has meant that nearly one of every four dollars contributed by churchgoers and maintained in a local account has gone to pro-life campaigns, instead of toward the program's stated purpose to "break the cycle of poverty" and "build community."
Nationwide, about $10 million from 195 dioceses goes into the national fund each year, while a little more than $3 million is maintained in local funds scattered around the nation, according to Barbara Stephenson, spokeswoman for the program's national office in Washington.

In Reno Diocese parishes, the Eucharist wine is not being offered to the faithful and wafers are being placed in parishioners' hands instead of directly on their tongues.
Officials with the Las Vegas Diocese, however, said such measures are not yet necessary in Southern Nevada.

Bishop McFarland subsequently petitioned Pope Paul Vl to redesignate the Diocese of Reno as the Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas with Guardian Angel Shrine in Las Vegas as Co-Cathedral.
Because of the growth in Nevada and the great distance between the communities of Reno and Las Vegas, the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II decided to divide the Diocese of Reno-Las Vegas into two separate dioceses: The Diocese of Reno and the Diocese of Las Vegas.

The Tennessee Court of Appeals said that Davidson County Circuit Judge Walter Kurtz was right when he ruled in June 2001 that the sexual abuse of the two boys in 1994-98 came too long after McKeown was forced to leave the priesthood in 1989 to hold the church accountable for his actions.
Church officials have said, since the two boys sued the diocese in 2000, that they ''acted to follow the law and the best medical advice of the time'' once they learned in the 1980s that McKeown had molested boys he met through the priesthood.
Each of the two boys who sued the diocese over being molested by McKeown is seeking $8 million in compensatory damages and $25 million in punitive damages.
