The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego has transferred real estate worth up to $325 million to an educational corporation, hurting the chances that sexual abuse victims will be paid for their suffering, a lawyer said in court papers filed yesterday.
The 925,000-member diocese could be ordered to pay as much as $500 million in damages if the San Diego cases go to trial, but the property transfers may make that impossible, Leavitt said.
Rodrigo Valdivia, the diocese's chancellor, said payments are being made as part of "pastoral outreach" to victims of sexual abuse – as long as people don't approach the church with lawyers.

Mexican Catholics were defined by the new bishop as a "burden" for his newly established diocese, due to their low economic status, and their lack of religious instruction in the Catholic faith.
In San Bernardino, for example, the appointment of the SAR priests was the result of numerous complaints from Mexican parishioners, regarding the lack of Spanish-speaking priests to minister to Mexican Catholics.
This was indicative of a Mexican Catholic laity, faithfully aligned with the Mexican Catholic Church, and directly influenced by the Catholic ideals of the Cristero Revolts.

The Roman Catholic diocese of San Diego was hit with 11 more lawsuits alleging children were sexually abused by 13 priests and a lay worker at a handful of church institutions from the 1940s to 1980.
One priest, the Rev. Barry Vinyard, flatly denies the allegations, according to a spokesman for the diocese.
As the lawsuits against the diocese continue to stack up, Valdivia said Bishop Robert H. Brom "remains open to exploring a pastoral resolution of any claim whether or not litigation is pending." The diocese has long preferred settling claims before they end up in court.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge rejected a challenge to a transfer of property by the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego, saying the plaintiffs lacked standing to claim that the diocese was trying to protect its assets from alleged sex-abuse victims.
The lawyer who brought the case had argued that the property transfers, potentially worth tens of millions of dollars, were an attempt to shield the diocese's assets from alleged victims of clergy sexual abuse who have sued the church.
San Diego attorney Andrea Leavitt would not say whether she planned to continue pursuing her claim, given Tuesday's ruling by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Haley Fromholz.
