Treny. The Laments of Kochanowski: SR, Month 2003
Czerniawski's translation distinguishes itself from previous, more literal or metrical translations of the Treny in that his mode of translation is "radically" different from others beginning with Bowring's 1827 edition and ending with the 1995 version of Seamus Heaney and Stanislaw Baranczak.
Czerniawski strives to convey the "Treny's accessibility and directness, as well as their pathos" (xv), avoiding "the pitfalls of mawkishness and familiarity, for the strength of Treny derives from a balance of immediacy and homeliness, on the one hand, and a sense of gravitas and dignity, on the other" (xv).
Czerniawski is certainly to be commended for engaging in this task and in general may also be congratulated for succeeding quite often.

Treny: The Laments of Kochanowski Canadian Slavonic Papers - Find Articles   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
The refined simplicity of Adam Czerniawski's translation is evident already in his rendering of the dedication of the cycle to the deceased girl, Orszula Kochanowska.
Czerniawski quite rightly dispenses with the dedication's lexical archaisms, but retains the tortuous formality of its syntax.
This is by no means a criticism of Czerniawski's translation; the syntactic rules of the English language are far stricter than those in Polish, and the translator was right not to break them.
