Mass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Mass is the setting, either polyphonic or in plainchant, of the liturgy of the Eucharist.
The term most commonly refers to the mass of the Roman Catholic church, whose Western traditions used texts in Latin from about the 4th century to 1966, when the use of the vernacular was mandated.
In the 17th century these two styles are found, sometimes even juxtaposed, in the Ordinary of the mass settings, along with the use of the concertato principle: one or more solo voices or instruments, in running scale passages, that contrast with the whole choral and instrumental ensemble.

 Mass
In the Roman rite Mass was celebrated in Latin from an early period until the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, which allowed for the use of vernacular languages, and which emphasized congregational singing and permitted communion in the forms of both bread and wine (previously the congregation had received only the bread).
Mass is the ritual of chants, readings, prayers, and other ceremonies used in the celebration of the Eucharist in the Roman Catholic church.
The pontifical Mass (solemn Mass of a bishop) is less elaborate, although besides deacons, subdeacons, thurifers (incense bearers), and acolytes, the bishop is also assisted by his familia (family), assistants who are responsible for taking care of his regalia (solemn vestments) and insignia (miter, crosier, and pontifical cross).

Other critics have alleged that the celebration of Mass according to the new Missal (Novus Ordo called by some) is unattractive and unappealing, and lacks the degree of ceremony and ritual that marked its predecessor.

In 1969 a new rite of Mass was promulgated in which, to paraphrase the bishops of the province of Westminster, prayers and ceremonies in previous use were subtracted, and the existing rite was remodeled in the most drastic manner.
Thus at the beginning of Mass, at the moment of Holy Communion, and at the conclusion of Mass, breaches with tradition were mandated that were certain to impose themselves upon the consciousness of the faithful.
Where the Mass continued to be offered in Latin by a conservative priest facing the altar and without the Prayer of the Faithful, the congregation could continue to use their pre-Vatican II Missals and would notice only the omission of Psalm 42, the Last Gospel, and the new formula for Holy Communion.

Why the Roman Catholic Mass and the Doctrine of Transubstantation are Idolatry by John Knox
Roman Catholics claim that the Church has power to set up, or invent new ways of honouring God as it sees fit, and God accepts them, but this is clearly not the truth.
What spirit tells us that the Mass is a sacrifice for the sins of the living and the dead, the Spirit of God or the spirit of man? The Catholics shamelessly claim Peter and John celebrated the first Mass, but they have not one shred of Scriptural proof.
In the Mass, the words of the Gospel are merely used as a cloak, a mask to hide the evil idolatry beneath.

The Roman Catholics say redemption is not finished, it is not done, and that they must re-create and partake in the mass in order to apply the work of Christ's redemption.
Essentially the Mass is the key element in a false, allegedly "Christian" religious system, whose actual, unstated purpose is to hold people captive to the system by claiming that salvation is partly found through this church controlled, mysterious ritual.

Now the Mass is the center of the whole Divine Office; we even believe it would be possible to show that at one time the first part of the Mass was the most eloquent and, indeed, the only mode of expression of this official prayer.
Sometimes Mass was celebrated in the catacombs on the outskirts of Rome, and this was especially the case on the anniversary days of the death of a martyr, when it was probably said on the tomb in which his relics reposed.
Indeed, at the beginning, it was not, as it is to-day, consecrated to the Mass alone.[14] It is a doxology in honour of the Father and the Son.

The "Order of Mass" is based on the Missale Romanum (The Roman Missal, revised by Decree of the Second Vatican Council and published by authority of Pope Paul VI).
When it is used, the Penitential Rite is omitted, and the Mass continues with the Gloria (on most Sundays and solemnities) or with the Opening Prayer (during Advent and Lent, and on weekdays).

For the traditional Roman rite this distinct characteristic is the Roman Canon.
In like manner the Roman Canon is a fixed standard of what the Roman Mass is. Despite all of the changes and developments that have occurred down throughout the centuries of the Roman rite's existence, one element has remained fixed and unchanged since the earliest days of the Church's recorded history: The Roman Canon.
In the traditional Roman Mass, on days of lower rank, in addition to the collect of the day, the collects of Our Lady, Our Lady and All the Saints, Against the Persecutors of the Church, For the Pope, or For the Faithful Departed, etc. are recited.

The Roman Catholic Mass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
According to Catholic doctrine, the mass is a re-sacrifice of Christ in which the bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Christ when it is blessed by the Catholic priest.
This means the wafer used in the mass is to be worshipped as Almighty God, both when it is offered during the mass and afterward when it is placed in a little tabernacle until the next mass.
While certain forms of the Mass have changed since Vatican II (it can be said in the vernacular instead of Latin and many prayers are omitted), the dogma of the Mass being a re-sacrifice of Christ has not changed.

For hundreds of years, Christians were persecuted by Roman authorities; however, during the fifth century, the once-underground Christian Church became not only tolerated—but formally established as the official church of Rome.
The prayers of the Mass Ordinary were among the most important musical texts of the Middle Ages and all subsequent historical eras.
The Mass was not the only sacred service in the Roman liturgy: a series of eight shorter daily prayer services known as the Divine Office (or "The Canonical Hours") was also developed during the Middle Ages.
