Le Nom de la rose (Il nome della rosa) est un roman de l'Italien Umberto Eco, paru en 1980 (traduit en français en 1982).
En 1327, alors que la chrétienté est divisée entre l'autorité du pape Jean XXII et celle de l'Empereur Louis IV du Saint-Empire, l'ex-inquisiteur Guillaume de Baskerville se rend dans une abbaye bénédictine, située entre Provence et Ligurie, accompagné par son secrétaire Adso.
Au-delà de l'enquête policière, on peut retenir de ce roman le combat d'un homme contre l'obscurantisme, un plaidoyer pour la liberté et le savoir.

I really only read the first part of the Roman de la Rose, this was written by Guillaume de Lorris; he was born about 1212 and died around 1237, leaving his poem incomplete.
The Roman de la Rose was given a brief conclusion by an anonymous poet; and then forty years later, Jean de Meun added another eighteen thousand lines to the poem.
The Roman de la Rose describes a young man’s dream, in which he enters the garden of an elegant gentleman named Déduit; there the young man falls in love with a perfect red rose.
