Romance (1999 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Romance (Romance X) is a 1999 French movie written and directed by Catherine Breillat.
The film contains several sex scenes that appear to have been unsimulated, especially the famous scene showing Caroline Ducey's coitus from behind with an erect Rocco Siffredi (who is not brought to completion, though).
The film claims to be artistic and so may be seen as different from ordinary pornography.

And although some criticized the final line of the film, it speaks volumes for the theme of the film, and its frankness reveals the truth of these two sexual beings, and we sense their marriage may indeed be better for all they experienced.
The film is harrowing in its portrayals of the real life reality of execution by electric chair, providing images of death than one will not soon forget, including a horrifying sequence of an execution gone wrong, where we are spared nothing in viewing what can truly go wrong with executions in the electric chair.
It was the film that was a phenomenon all its own in 1999, showing the power of the internet to market a film, and showing how a cheaply produced independent film can indeed reach a mass audience, to the tune of $145 million at the boxoffice.

 Darcy's Korean Film Page - 1999
This is the second film this year to portray North Koreans in a sympathetic light; the last director to try this did so in the 1960s, and was subsequently jailed for his efforts.
What makes this film so bad is not so much the cast, chosen from a growing population of Western actors working in Korea (although in truth their acting is quite terrible), but rather the script, which is packed with more tired cliches than I ever knew existed.
With its splintered narrative and hardly a drop of blood, the film lingers instead on the dynamics of the classroom and the intensity of its young heroines.

Romance (genre)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The meaning of the word romance has changed from the 1300s when it arose as a literary genre telling the "story of a hero's adventures," written in the "vernacular language of France" (as opposed to Latin), to "a love story" (in a literary context (1600s), everyday speech (1900s)).
Many medieval romances recount the marvelous adventures of a chivalrous, heroic knight, often of super-human ability, who, abiding chivalry's strict codes of honour and demeanour, fights and defeats monsters and giants, thereby winning favour with a beautiful, but fickle princess.
The second half of the twelfth century saw the emergence of a new genre, the romance, which was consciously conceived as fictional and therefore allowed largely to break free from traditional presuppositions.

Most of the film is devoted to the relationship between these two, and the sharpness of Wells' focus on the characters keeps the movie engaging, even when it ventures into familiar territory.
Although the film contains its share of effective moments and genuine drama, it feels like just one more story of a troubled marriage where the initial feelings of romance prove to be inadequate to keep things going.
The mother/daughter relationship holds this film together as the plot veers uncertainly through a minefield of melodramatic situations: failed marriages, abusive menfolk, and teenage rebellion.

In his 1999 film, Mifune, Danish filmmaker Soren Kragh-Jacobsen didn’t so much employ the techniques of the Dogme filmmaking system so much as surmount them with a blend of rough comedy, unbridled sexuality, and a profound faith in romance.
It’s a measure of Kragh-Jacobsen’s film’s relative complexity that one of its minor accomplishments is a refutation of wealth; contrarily, it asserts money is more often an impediment to love that a help.
But the film’s tone is so distinguished that it may never cross the viewer’s mind that the material itself is familiar stuff.
