 Japanese for the Memoralogically Challenged
As I was struggling to pronounce my first romanicized Japanese words (Romanji"), I had to deal with the fact that corresponding letters do not necessarily have corresponding sound.
Don't get me wrong, Romanji is an invaluable tool in the learning process for a native English speaker, but it is also a crutch and stop-gap measure that does not allow for the proper conveyance of Japanese.
Just as training wheels are used and discarded by a child learning to ride a bike, romanization gives the user a false sense of the language and facilitates mistakes that written Japanese would preclude, or make more difficult.

If you don't know what romanji is, then I shall tell you.
Romanji is the spelling out of Japanese words, phrases, etc. and you read it as you would say it.
So basically it's putting Japanese into English letters so that you don't have to know the kanji/hiragana/katakana to read it.

AikiWeb Aikido Forums - Vowel Pairs: 'ai', 'ei', etc
The katakana for translating the 'aye' sound is also 'ai' as in 'Bai Bai' as the romanji version of the American farewell.
I have also seen that 'ii' in romanji can describe a long 'i' rather than multiple syllables, but in I have seen '-o' sounds that are lengthened with a 'u' in both romanji and hiragana, so I am curious and confused by the discepency of romanji and attempts at translating pronunciation.
However, I have yet to see the reasoning for multiple and varying vowel pairs that are seemingly one syllable, nor a "comprehensive" listing of the pairs and their appropriate pronunciation.
