AN enduring mystery took a new twist yesterday when a Russian man claimed to be the son of the last heir to the throne, the Tsarevich Alexei, who historians say was shot dead aged 14 by Bolsheviks in 1918.
Oleg Filatov, 45, a customs inspector from St Petersburg, has the backing of some researchers and dignitaries for his claim to be the heir to the Romanov dynasty.
He says that Alexei, the youngest child, survived the Bolshevik firing squad which murdered the imperial couple, Nicholas II and Alexandra, and daughters, Olga, Tatyana, Maria and Anastasia, in Yekaterinburg.
