Cardiff Corvey Articles, X.3: T.S. WAGNER. Nostalgia for Home or Homelands
Wholeheartedly endorsing the new nationalist ideology of the homeland, regional novels and national tales, by contrast, attempt to create a communal nostalgia for places that are meant to be exotic to the general reader, while construing memories of something that is familiar, though remote enough to be invested with the allure of the exotic.
It is this twist that complicates an anti-Jacobin reading, singling out the novel as a significantly and intriguingly ambiguous treatment of the repercussions of nationalist and radical ideologies and particularly their use and abuse of sympathies with the homeless as well as of nostalgia for a home.
Romantic nationalism as founded on a shared culture is instead shown to clash with a personal past; the xenophobia nurtured by Jacobin as well as anti-Jacobin ideologies with the heroine’s hybridity; and a manufactured nationalist heritage nostalgia with homesickness.

Designing an original romantic fantasy setting and then working out the basics of the rules for simulating this genre was one of the most exciting and challenging tasks that I have ever faced as a game designer.
Romantic fantasy novels usually feature valiant female warriors and in most of these books, female soldiers and mercenaries are common and normal, at least in enlightened kingdoms.
In contrast, ritual magic in romantic fantasy tends to be the province of villains, who use it to bind others to their will or to summon horrific creatures and dangerous spirits.

Taking together the ideological content of the novels and the capitalist profit motive, with the resulting standardization, we might arrive at a view similar to Adorno's and Horkheimer's critique of the stultifying effect of the culture industries.
However, Radway sees that it is important to distinguish between the ideological implications internal to the text, the meaning of the text as it is received and interpreted and, finally, the significance of the activity of receiving and interpreting.
What they might have learned about human character and relationships from reading the novels is not valorized by their husbands, but concrete facts about geography, history, transportation systems and so on are, the more obscure the better.

BBC - h2g2 - The romantic novels of Georgette Heyer
Georgette Heyer (1902-1974) is known as a writer of Regency romances, and no-one has matched her in the genre of light-hearted romantic historical fiction.
She was prolific, writing historical and crime novels at the rate of one or more a year from the 1920s to the 1970s, and so it is hard to summarise her works briefly.
Her earliest novels are set in England and France before or during the French Revolution, and in contrast to her later works, they feature improbable elements such as kidnappings, girls dressed as boys, horseback rescues, heroines threatened at pistol point, smugglers and émigré aristocrats.

Romantic may be in the eye of the beholder, and let me tell you why: The most "romantic" stories I've read do not necessarily have happy endings, but they've magnificently depicted the yearning for love.
