Ancient Rome was a civilization that grew from a city-state founded on the Italian Peninsula circa the 9th century BC to a massive empire straddling the Mediterranean Sea.
According to archaeological evidence, the village of Rome was probably founded sometime in the 9th century BC by members of two central Italian tribes, the Latins and the Sabines, on the Palatine, Capitoline, and Quirinal Hills.
In 410, the city of Rome itself was sacked by Alaric I and the Visigoths, and on September 4, 476, the Germanic chief Odoacer forced the last Roman emperor in the west, Romulus Augustus, to abdicate.

Every detail in its re-creation of ancient Rome may not be correct, but the spirit and the overall picture ring true — and the entertainment value resounds.
But by moving outside the halls of power and into the city's streets, this series does create a sense of Rome as a living and breathing place — the vibrant, colorful, sensual, crowded center of the ancient world — that has never been matched on TV.
Rome could be a rough and licentious town, and Rome exercises that historical license through throat-slashings, brain-drillings and full-frontal nudity, male and female.

It is a cliche among modern critics that public fascination with ancient Rome is driven by politics and imperialism.
The new Rome series has an awful lot of bonking dressed up as "an authentic glimpse of the ancient world".
A BBC series which presented the French as garlic-reeking gluttons, tucking into frogs' legs and snails, or the Germans as a load of jack-booted cabbage eaters, might not end up with a prosecution but it would certainly prompt an appearance from the relevant ambassador on the Today programme, lamenting our dependence on these worn-out stereotypes.

The piece is a riot of sexy courtesans out of burlesque, gags that owe more to ancient vaudeville than ancient Rome, and such imperishable stock characters as the dirty old man, the dumb blonde and the bossy old bag of a wife.
