Masters of Rome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Masters of Rome is a series of historical fiction novels by author Colleen McCullough (b.
1937) set in ancient Rome during the last days of the old Roman Republic; it primarily chronicles the lives and careers of Gaius Marius, Lucius Cornelius Sulla, Pompey the Great, Julius Caesar, and the early career of Caesar Augustus.
Certain wise leaders (such as Marius, and later Caesar) tried to reform the old ways, in a manner that would be consistent with Rome's retention of its basic character as a republic.

In this great drama, Marius, the general who saved Rome from barbarian invasion and became consul an unprecedented six times, has fallen into decline.
As a deadly enmity develops between the two men, Rome must fight its own battle for survival - first against her neighbouring Italian states, then against the barbaric Asian conqueror.
Births, deaths, prophecies and rivalries combine to create a whirlwind of drama, and a remarkable insight into the passion and torment of ancient Rome.

I have read a lot of historical fiction and was used to authors routinely ignoring the real nitty gritty of daily life in previous ages in order to get on with their story.
After reading all of McCullough's "Masters of Rome" books (those written as of this date) this one is still my favorite.
It tells more about the characters, the culture of rome (she even includes a picture of what shape a toga cloth must have been and why someone came to this conclusion), and the terminology.

Ever since I started reading The First Man in Rome I was completely captured by McCulloughs excellent combination of historical facts and an authors fiction.
So, here it is. Must be nearly 10 years since I read 'The First Man in Rome' and so started on Colleen McCullough's 'Masters of Rome' series.

Meanwhile, Cicero, Caesar's main rival, is portrayed as an incurable vacillator and social climber who displays scant gratitude toward his "sour" and "ugly" wife, Terentia, despite her foiling a conspiracy against his life.
In the fourth book in her "Masters of Rome" series, McCullough (Fortune's Favorites, LJ 9/1/93) details Caesar's rise to power from 68-58 B.C. Caesar repeatedly outmaneuvers his enemies, who devise one scheme after another to bring about his political, economic, and social downfall.
The stage he now moves into is the political life of Rome, just recovering from the dictatorship of Sulla, a period of political violence.
