DVD Review - Romeo Must Die   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
It hit theaters earlier this year under the title "Romeo Must Die" and is now coming to DVD courtesy of Warner Home Video, who do have a bit of experience "blending" Hong Kong elements with modern American tastes, as we have seen in "The Matrix."
As expected, "Romeo Must Die" is a vehicle tailor made for Jet Li.
"Romeo Must Die" is without a doubt one of the weaker films Jet Li has had on his slate, but is still entertaining.

Romeo Must Die is the second Hollywood production that Jet Li has appeared in, but his involvement in films goes way back to 1979 where he has made more than 30 movies in Asia.
So trying to choose the best movie to associate yourself with Jet Li first, Romeo Must Die is probably the worst one of them all - which is not to say that his performance here is rotten.
My debut viewing had me thinking that the story was quite interesting and complex, however repeated screenings made me realise that after you knew the plot back to front you were just aching for the action to kick in.

Romeo Must Die is a story about family loyalty and betrayal…the type of betrayal even Shakespeare’s Romeo couldn’t have fathomed.
Mothers are generally useless in gangster films but the filmmakers of Romeo Must Die knocked off both sets of mothers, yet manage to have the mothers live on as a kind of pure sweet memory of distant goodness.

Apparently "Romeo Must Die" is the movie that Warner Brothers promised Jet Li if he were to take the villain role in Lethal Weapon 4.
"Romeo Must Die" has all the elements of being a loose retelling of Romeo and Juliet.
Secondly there is a lot of action in "Romeo Must Die" which should propel it to high box office heights.

Romeo Must Die is an entertaining but forgettable film starring Jet Li as the "Romeo" of the title.
Meanwhile, the daughter of the fl family is trying to lead a normal life, and wants nothing to do with her family's no-good business dealings, but her father insists that she be protected in case there is some kind of retaliation by the Chinese (which of course there is).
Romeo Must Die suffers from the problem that a lot of action films suffer from, namely the fact that even though people are being shot, blown up and otherwise damaged, the police don't show up.

It is the most imaginative and exciting battle in "Romeo Must Die." And it contains the film's one really fantastic special effects twist - "X-ray violence," as the FX crew calls it.
"X-ray violence" is used sparingly in "Romeo Must Die" to enhance a handful of battles, but the incessant use of computerized slo-mo effects only diminishes the action.
"Romeo Must Die" is most exciting when the improbable martial arts moves seem realistic and possible.

To be perfectly honest, Romeo Must Die is not much more than that, but there are a few parameters that give it some things most similar movies don’t have.
Romeo comes in the form of Han Sing, played by Jet Li (The Enforcer, Lethal Weapon 4), a Hong Kong action superstar.
Romeo Must Die is a directorial debut of Andrzej Bartkowiak, who was behind the fancy camera work in blockbusters such as Dante’s Peak, Lethal Weapon 4 and US Marshalls.

A remake of "Romeo And Juliet" in Oakland, CA., "Romeo Must Die" stars Li as Han Sing, a cop who breaks out of a Hong Kong prison as the movie opens.
She takes us through all of the equipment and safety measures that have to be used for the movie, and we get to see the stunts being filmed.
Final Thoughts: "Romeo Must Die" is a very well-done and enjoyable action movie, and the presentation on this Warner Brothers DVD definitely is excellent.

``Romeo Must Die'' is a variation on the Shakespearean warring clans love story, with Chinese and African American mobsters vying for control of the Oakland waterfront (where a new football stadium is to be built, but never mind).
In ``Romeo Must Die,'' he can be playful, soulful, menacing, self-mocking (on one occasion he pretends to be a deliveryman), but he is not the great lover.
The ``Romeo and Juliet'' character he most resembles is Romeo's high- spirited, mercurial buddy Mercutio, but I guess ``Mercutio Must Die'' wouldn't fly.

Romeo Must Die, directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, is a movie for martial arts enthusiasts featuring the grim and scary-looking Jet Li, allowed to play the good guy for once, as Han, a one-man enforcer of peace on rival gangs in Oakland, California.
It is also a variant of the Romeo and Juliet story, as Han falls for Trish (Aaliyah) the daughter of the fl gang leader, Isaak O'Day (Delroy Lindo) who is suspected of having arranged for the murder of his brother, the other (bad) son of Han's (bad) Chinese gang leader father.
When Trish's own sort-of bad brother is killed, presumably by the Chinese, she and Han team up to expose the true crooks and murderers and to bring peace to gangland, in the process redeeming the sins of their respective fathers.

Jet Li first came to the attention of the West with his breakthrough role in Once Upon a Time in China which was the film that motivated producer, Joel Silver (The Matrix) to fit Li into a project in the States.
Overall, the film is one of Li's weaker efforts, mostly due to an uneasy fusion of the Western hip hop culture with the Asian influence.

Romeo Must Die (2000): Jet Li, Russell Wong, Delroy Lindo, Aaliyah, DMX - PopMatters Film Review
Romeo Must Die creates a world which is inhabited almost exclusively by African Americans and Chinese characters, most of them capable of treachery and deceit, and in which white people's money is the root of all evil.
Romeo Must Die thus targets the "general" U.S. audience which propelled The Matrix and Lethal Weapon 4 to their blockbuster status.
Romeo needs to appeal to this wider audience and at the same time not to alienate the fans — Li told Newsweek that Silver based his crossover story and casting strategy on research following Lethal Weapon 4, which, not surprisingly, showed that urban rap fans also liked Li's movies.

SPLICEDwire | "Romeo Must Die" review (2000)
Most freely adapted from Shakespeare, "Romeo Must Die" is a pounding-adrenaline martial arts action flick with a rival gang romance subplot that seems to have lifted more from "Macbeth" than "Romeo and Juliet" -- mainly that it's full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
But while the ambitious conspiracy narrative, the wowing 70mm photography and the ante-upping action scenes are impressive, "Romeo Must Die" just isn't the keeper it ought to be.
Li's undeniable charisma and incredible physical ability carry "Romeo" pretty far, so if his style of rock'em sock'em martial arts action is all you're looking for, it's hard to go wrong with this one.

 Romeo Must Die
Loosely based on Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet', 'Romeo Must Die' was Jet Li's first starring role after he appeared on the Hollywood scene in 'Lethal Weapon 4'.
The premise of combining a classic love story with kung fu shows potential and with the right handling of the concept could easily have proved to be a winner but sadly the film never really manages to settle on a specific area of expertise.
Even with the obvious criticisms, 'Romeo Must Die' still earns itself three stars because next to the competition it has to get extra marks for attempting something new combined with the Hong Kong style of action (even if it is taken a little too far here).

A Movie Parable: Romeo Must Die
ROMEO MUST DIE provides an updated answer to Shakespeare's literary question: "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?" With martial artist Jet Li (Lethal Weapon IV) as the star, the reply might as well have been written, "To kicketh the vile hordes where the sun doth not shine."
When Han (which must be Chinese for Romeo?), played by Jet Li, learns of his brother's demise, he escapes his jail cell (even though he was manacled and suspended upside down at the time) and travels to Oakland to solve and avenge the murder.
Obviously the main attraction to a film like ROMEO MUST DIE is the opportunity to see incredible fight sequences by martial arts experts.

 Romeo Must Die
There is a scene at the beginning of Romeo Must Die that announces its intentions pretty clearly, in which a Chinese man sits in a night club watching two gorgeous women on a dance floor french kissing.
Second, the relationship between Romeo and Juliet is bloodless and without passion, which indicates that the filmmakers don't care about the characters so much as they care about bodies and bullets in motion.
But on the whole, Romeo Must Die is so much less than the sum of its parts that it stands revealed as the shallow exploitation film that it is. Jet Li and his fans deserve better.
