William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This film is a transposition of Shakespeare's play into the present day, with swords replaced by guns and castles with skyscrapers, and was directed at a younger, modern audience.
The film differs from the play in that the character Paris (or Dave Paris, the modern renaming) is not killed, and that the Montagues provoke the initial fight instead of the Capulets.
The Sword and Dagger handguns that were used in the film were standard Beretta Model 92FS and Taurus 92 9mm Parabellum handguns that were fitted with customised slides and accessories.

When Romeo and Juliet are secretly married, a choir sings “Everybody’s Free,” which is also ironic because again these lovers are not free to spend their lives together.
Romeo arrives as a knight, a typical hero and a typical storyline of a knight in shining armour.
Juliet’s parents are dressed as Caesar and Cleopatra, which symbolises the sense of her father being head of the house and her mother as his Queen.

Romeo and Juliet is a famous play by William Shakespeare concerning the fate of two young star-crossed lovers.
Juliet is extremely grieved when she hears this, and when she realizes that her father will force her to go through with the marriage to Paris, she seeks the help of Friar Lawrence once more.
Romeo and Juliet is one of the earlier works in the Shakespearean canon, and while it is often classified as a tragedy, it does not bear the hallmarks of the 'great tragedies' like Hamlet and Macbeth.

Natalie Portman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She was the first choice to play Juliet in the 1996 film Romeo + Juliet, but turned it down because of the adult content and the age difference between her and Leonardo DiCaprio.
In 1996, to Portman's surprise, casting director for the new Star Wars films Robin Gurland contacted her to see if she was interested in playing the female lead in the new films.
Shortly before the film's opening, Portman shaved her head for her role in the film adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel, V for Vendetta, released in March 2006.

Juliet Capulet has all the makings of a modern leading lady in a blockbuster "chick-flick." Claire Danes proved that to be true in the 1996 movie of Romeo and Juliet.
Juliet's attitude (and her parents' leniency in the beginning) is uncharacteristic behavior for the Elizabethan era when daughters were generally not given choices.
Romeo is certain they will and assures her that "all their woes shall serve" (3.5.52) as topics for conversation in their later years.

Guardian | A gentleman of Verona Beach, CA
Luhrmann's 1996 film of Romeo and Juliet, transposed to "Verona Beach, California", was greeted by critics as a clever updating of this classic and a jolly good thing for American teenagers.
When, at the beginning of the film, the names of the play's characters flash up over their pictures in TV reports of recent family feuding, we might enjoy the witty anachronism.
This has replaced the conviction (born of the Franco Zefferelli Romeo and Juliet) that the same courtship takes place to the sound of a song in an inadvertently hilarious male falsetto.

Romeo And Juliet [1996] DVD at Shop Ireland
The film is certainly not for the purist, the original script seems largely optional both in terms of which bits are used and the order in which the lines appear.
This film will never escape its tag of "dumbed-down" Shaespeare, nor does it deserve to: it is. The subtlety and slow burn of the inevitable slide into passion-fuelled tragedy is sacrificed for the wham-bam of the gangster movie and the assumption of the 40-second attention span.
The film, however, is not wholly faithful to the script - although the original middle English is spoken, not modern English, the editing of the film means that some scenes are in a different order to the play and there is some cutting of lines.

Romeo and Juliet, whether based in modern-day California or Elizabethan Italy, or anywhere in between, is one of the most beautiful and powerful stories ever written.

While the film may not be a literal depiction of Shakespeare’s original Romeo and Juliet, it is still a functional tool when trying to understand the play because of its use of modern day support, important text, and most importantly, its use of imagery.
In the very opening of the scene Romeo is outside of Juliet’s window and begins to compare the magnitude of her beauty to the brilliance of the sun.
First Juliet, in her white dress and wings, is Romeo’s literal “bright angel.” Romeo, on the other hand, is dressed as the chivalrous night in shining armor as Boy King Arthur.

This film is a masterpiece that is beautifully shot, beautifully performed, that has a perfect soundtrack, and all in all is a wonderful interpretation that should be celebrated for its genius.
Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet was not made to be a sedate and quiet drama, it was written about a time and place that was quite racy by Elizabethan England's standards.

Though the film is a delight to watch, anyone who has studied Shakespeare beyond the high school level knows that the plot for Romeo and Juliet was inspired by much more than Shakespeare's affairs (whether theatrical or sexual) and that it is highly unlikely Twelfth Night followed on its heels.
Nevertheless, the film charms audiences not only with its vision of socio-economically-crossed lovers, but also with its modernist mystification of the autonomous author who can generate great art only when inspired by great beauty and even greater love.

Juliet was supposed to be so much younger than she is in this (but, again, to make this fit with present day, someone of marrying age needed to be used), and the love is between two young people who are just learning what love really is.
