The perceived advantages of dextromethorphan in comparison to codeine were the lack of physical addiction and the absence of a sedative-like effect from a normal dosage.
While it did not take recreational codeine users long to unlock the abuse potential of dextromethorphan, it took thirteen years from Romilar’s initial debut for it to be withdrawn from the shelves.
Manufacturers instead re-released dextromethorphan to the public in syrup form, which was harder to abuse in quantity.

And now one of the prominent developments of our times has been the discovery (or rediscovery) of a variety of consciousness-expanding drugs and the rapid increase in their use by individuals, alone or in groups, in an explicitly religious context or apart from such.
Romilar turned out to be useful for the same purposes thanks to its key ingredient, dextromethorphan.
Manufacturers discovered this in the late 1960s and began to lace their cough medicines with chemicals designed solely to induce nausea, but while drinking a bottle became stomach-churning adventure, the psychedelic trip was undiminished.

Instead, in dutiful, turgid prose, he chronicles every nasal inhaler wick Bangs swallowed (I kid you not) and every belt of Romilar he swigged, evidently convinced that these desperate, pathetic excesses somehow linked Bangs to the "romantic tradition of madman as truth-teller."

J: Well, the subtitle actually undersells Lester's talents -- "America's greatest rock critic" is like saying "Ethiopia's best chef" or "the Sahara's best swimmer." He was one of the best writers of his generation, period.
But I can't underscore enough that it wasn't only based on that funny, fluid, Beats-on-acid (or Romilar or speed) prose style.
That was vastly entertaining, sure, but what keeps people coming back to "Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung", the 1987 anthology of his work, what prompts people to quote him in their email signature files, and to read his biography, is the fact that he had these great, probing philosophical insights in his work.
