The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is a 15 inch (380 mm) gauge heritage railway in Kent, England.
As well as being a tourist attraction, this railway is a useful service between the small towns it serves and is also under contract to the local council to transport schoolchildren to and from school, for which purpose a special train is used.
The driver of the train, Suzanne Martin, the wife of the railway's general manager, Danny Martin, was killed in the accident.

Old Romney and New Romney were linked, with the port at New Romney moving further away from the old town as the coastline spread into the English Channel.
On the 16th July 1927, the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway was opened, which stretches for nearly 14 miles from Hythe through Dymchurch, St Marys Bay and its base at New Romney to the fishermens cottages and lighthouses at Dungeness.

On my last trip to the UK, I had planned to make a visit to the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway on the way back to Dover to catch the ferry.
I arrived at Dymchurch just in time to photograph the last trains in each direction, with just about enough light to get a reasonable picture.
On a warm July evening we had had a meal and a pint or two in a pub in Bath, then we settled back in a compartment to watch the lights slide into the twilight as the train climbed out of the city.

I had a free ticket to Rye, courtesy of Southern, who were celebrating the opening of a fast through route (by diesel) to Ashford, but as it didn't stop at London Road, had to get a train to Lewes and change there.
My original plan was to go to New Romney and get a return to Dungerness, have a look at the nuclear power station and Derek Jarman's garden, then head back to Rye, so I turned down the offer of a combined bus and RH & DR ticket for £13.50.
But as the schlep from the bus stop outside the Ship to New Romney station was so long and boring, I decided to go on to Hythe and catch the bus back from there - and bash (almost) the whole line.

There is no main line railway station at Dymchurch but if you come here by using the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway from Hythe you can see the Church spire of SS.
At the edge of the Romney Marshes, Dymchurch was a town that was extensively frequented by the smugglers and at one time troops had to be quartered here.
Around Dymchurch and along the coast down to Dungeness are many cottages/chalets, call them what you like, made of old railway carriages.
