Romtelecom is the largest telecommunications company in Romania; the majority of shares are held by the Greek telecommunications company OTE (54.01% of shares).
The current name of Romtelecom was given after a reorganization in July 1991, when the state-owned company was also given the monopoly for basic telecommunications services.
Romtelecom owns 30% of the Cosmote România mobile phone operator (the ex-Cosmorom).

The development of the Next Generation Network (NGN) was put on hold as RomTelecom decided to reduce investments to the minimum necessary to insure a "certain functioning level," said the company's General Director James Hubley, yesterday in a press conference.

National telecom operator RomTelecom will launch, in early July, a national billing system that will allow the company "to do most of the things the mobile telephony operators are doing," Dan Pazara, RomTelecom's head of external relations told Ziarul Financiar.
As compared to the beginning of 2003, when access to the fixed telephony market was deregulated, the number of fixed telephony lines has grown by a mere 200,000, whereas mobile telephony services saw their number of subscribers surge by almost 5 million.
RomTelecom will be able to introduce certain rate levels for specific groups of users (such as "Friends" or "Family"), with the calls within these groups set to cost less.

It is the smallest mobile phone operator in the country, after Orange Romania, Vodafone Romania and Zapp Mobile and seventh on the list of phone networks in Romania (after Orange, Vodafone, Romtelecom, Zapp, RDS.tel and Astral IPphone).
Cosmorom was a subsidy of the former Romanian national phone operator Romtelecom and it never had reported any profit and it has been estimated that the initial investment and subsequent loss that was covered by the mother company reached over a billion dollars.
