For example, inventing a new "particle of the week" to defeat the Romulan cloaking device is treknobabble; the improved "Ghost Rider" missiles introduced into the Royal Manticoran Navy are not.
That wider world is more technologically advanced than our (the readers') own world was at the time of the book's writing.
Also, fans (or fen, in the argot of the topic) originated science fiction conventions, a way of meeting to discuss their mutual interest; the original and largest convention is the Worldcon.

The ship was later involved in more Romulan skirmishes as well as being point vessel when war broke out with the Klingons in 2266, leading the the historic Organian Peace Treaty.
Among the missions it participated in were the rescue of hostages taken by Sybok on Nimbus III and the historic Khitomer accords that made peace with the Klingons.

This is something that occurs all the time in Trek and in just about any action based movie or tv show there is. Of course if reality ruled then then would die and there would not be a series.
