Asheton is preparing for a Stooges recording session to take place here, one that will see Iggy and the band (surrogate bassist Mike Watt, Ron and drummer Scott Asheton) record demos with Warn Defever for a new Stooges record, as well as a Junior Kimbrough song (“You Better Run”) for an upcoming tribute album.

Ron and Scott Asheton formed a ridiculously primitive rhythm section, pounding out chords with no finesse -- in essence, the Stooges were the first rock & roll band completely stripped of the swinging beat that epitomized R&B and early rock & roll.
Adopting the name Iggy Stooge, he rounded up brothers Ron and Scott Asheton (guitar and drums, respectively) and bassist Dave Alexander, and the group debuted at a Halloween concert at the University of Michigan student union in 1967.
Dave Alexander left the band and Ron Asheton moved to bass as James Williamson joined as guitarist, but this incarnation wasn't able to land a record deal, despite recording a handful of demos.

The Stooges concert review, DTE Energy Music Theatre, Clarkston, MI Aug. 25, 2003
As Iggy jumped, yelped and agitated the swarming, frenzied crowd, Ron Asheton, with goatee and U.S. army shirt (his Nazi outfit from the early '70s must've been at the dry cleaners) stood stoically as he effortlessly delivered some of the nastiest, foundation-loosening rhythm guitar known to man or beast.
Brother Scott Asheton along with Mike Watt, with slacked-jaw and a deer-in-the-headlights glaze on his eyes (probably in amazement that he's actually part of this legendary band), not only did justice to The Stooges' early material, but actually helped up the ante, providing rafter-rattling rhythms which taunted and spurred on their animalistic frontman.
With long brown locks, scruffy whiskers, sinewy x-rated torso fully exposed and all of the stage-stealing thunder of his youth fully intact, Iggy perfected many of the nihilistic frontman antics that he originally created at a time when people still had flowers in their hair and were singing about peace and love.

Asheton’s finest Stratocaster — a ’57 Strat with a maple neck — ended up as the proverbial “one that got away,” into the hands of Dan Erlewine, guitarist in the Prime Movers, a pre-Stooges blues band for whom Ron played bass.
Asheton lifted the idea from sitar players like Ravi Shankar, “...because they keep that drone going, while he’s picking all those notes.” His other influences included blues guitarists Albert and B.B. King, to whom he was introduced in the Prime Movers, along with Jimi Hendrix.
Dark Carnival, Asheton’s major outlet since ’85, is on indefinite hiatus; singer Niagara has focused on her artwork, while drummer L.J. Steele had been splitting time between his own band, The Impossibles, and working as a grip for commercials and movies.

The Austin Chronicle Music: Review - J Mascis, Ron Asheton, Mike Watt, Tower Records, Friday 16
To longtime fans, therefore, it came as no surprise that Mascis and Fog member Mike Watt, another SST underground hero whose music was informed by punk rock, lured Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton to join them at both their Thursday night South by Southwest showcase and at Friday's in-store at Tower Records on the Drag.
The stout, goateed Asheton kept to the front of the stage, poking his guitar out in true interactive form.
A smattering of old-schoolers in attendance got their rocks off in a big way, but even the later generation couldn't escape the crushing waves of sound ping-ponging off the store's high walls and ceiling.

It was around this time that Williamson joined his first band, the Chosen Few, and discovered the harder sounds of the British Invasion (namely the Rolling Stones), which in turn toughened up his playing style.
The band broke up shortly thereafter, with Asheton eventually switching to the six-string and going on to form the Stooges by the late '60s, along with Asheton's brother Scott on drums, bassist Dave Alexander, and the incomparable frontman Iggy Pop.
When the auditions proved unfruitful, the Asheton brothers were asked to re-join, with Asheton moving to bass.

J Mascis and The Fog - PopMatters Concert Review
Towards the end of the Fog's set, Mike Watt called out Ron Asheton and drilled a canyon through the Stooges' "Loose", with Watt stabbing his middle finger forward in the brief pause between "I'll stick it deep inside" and "cuz I'm loose, always".
Asheton spent probably half his time wild-fingering way up high on the neck, with Watt howling, and it was especially nice to see J step back and play almost exclusively chords during what's probably the most fun and furious surprise I've ever seen live.
For anyone who deeply cares about the kind of independent music produced by SST bands in the 1980s, to see two giants of that movement — Mike Watt and J Mascis —; play with the sort of undersung godfather guitarist that Asheton is, and do seven straight Stooges songs.

By this point, guitarist Ron Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander had been edged out of the picture, and James Williamson had signed on as Iggy's new guitar mangler; Asheton rejoined the band shortly before recording commenced on Raw Power, but was forced to play second fiddle to Williamson as bassist.
By most accounts, tensions were high during the recording of Raw Power, and the album sounds like the work of a band on its last legs -- though rather than grinding to a halt, Iggy & the Stooges appeared ready to explode like an ammunition dump.

In the midst of all this action, as far back as the early ’90s, observers were getting wind of guitarist Ron Asheton (when he was in the band Dark Carnival) setting clubs on fire with his versions of Stooges songs.
Although Iggy had stayed in touch with Ron and Scott over the years, visited them at home in Ann Arbor, and occasionally invited them to jam at a gig, it had not gone any further.
It marked the first time that Iggy, Ron and Scott – his original co-founders in ‘The Psychedelic Stooges’; back in 1967 – had been recorded together since the Halloween 1973 riot-show debacle at Detroit’s Michigan Palace that turned into the Stooge’s final official LP, Metallic KO (issued in ’76).
