Ron began investigating accidents when he was with the RNZAF, then transferred to the Ministry of Transport, and in 1990 became Chief Inspector of Accidents with the then new Transport Accident Investigation Commission.
Since 1990Ron has been Investigator-in-Charge of 48 aircraft and rail accidents and incidents, and had overall responsibility for the investigation of approximately 400 accidents and incidents.
Over the last few years Ron has put a great deal of effort into disseminating his knowledge to the Commission's other 6 aircraft, rail, and marine accident investigators, and contributed to formalising procedures and the routine use of consultants in human performance, fatigue, and organisational factors.

The water that discharges at Barton Springs originates from the Barton Springs segment of the Edwards aquifer (hereafter referred to as the ``Barton Springs segment'').
The salamander has been observed at depths of about 0.1 to 5 meters (m) (0.3 to 16 feet (ft)) of water under gravel and small rocks, submerged leaves, and algae; among aquatic vegetation; and buried in organic debris.
A formal description of the salamander was peer-reviewed and published in June 1993 (Chippindale et al.

Attention was then focussed on the possibility of pilot error, pointing to the inexperience of the two pilots in flying in the Antarctic.
A report by the chief inspector of aircraft accidents, RonChippindale, came out in May 1980.
It stated that the decision of the captain in dropping to a height below the approved level, and continuing at that height when the crew was not sure of the plane's position, had been the main cause of the accident.

Cary spoke to Ron who thought it was a great idea, so at the beginning of the year Paul attended an AHRG meeting to put the case for a night event.
It was not long before Darryl who had not been perfectly well from the start asked Paul to take over the driving and than called for an immediate stop after which he felt much better.
Tragically the politicians of the time did not see it as "expedient" to use RonChippindale to assist the Commission.
It cannot be disputed that the airline promoted the whole thing as a low level sightseeing flight, and the airline cannot escape the fact that Captain Collins was endeavoring to do what the airline expected him to do.
There is no doubt that Chippindale produced a magnificent report with detailed analysis of thousands of pieces of evidence.

Instead, an amended version of the transcript, with many important differences and additions, was published in the 1980 report of chief air accidents inspector RonChippindale, who blamed pilot error for the crash.
The Chippindale transcript has been criticised in the past, including by Justice Peter Mahon, whose 1981 royal commission report blamed a computer blunder for the crash, but this is the first time the original transcript has been made public for comparison.
The original was the most accurate transcript possible, and neither Mr Chippindale nor Justice Mahon could have improved on it from their own listening to the CVR tape, he said.

Mr Goff said time and nature had healed the scars on the mountain but those who lost loved ones would be grieving on the anniversary.
He told the media it was quite possible the truth of what happened lay somewhere between the view of Chief Inspector of Air Accidents RonChippindale that the pilots erred, and that of royal commissioner Justice Mahon, who blamed Air New Zealand's "predetermined plan of deception" and "orchestrated litany of lies.
Most certainly the co-ordinates were wrongly programmed; the pilots were not advised of that.
We were indeed fortunate that this accident was subjected to two separate investigations: the Royal Commission headed by the late Justice Sir Peter Mahon, and the report by air accident investigator RonChippindale.
While noting the central importance of his findings, we should not necessarily reject the alternative finding of Mr Chippindale, who found the pilot (Jim Collins) culpable for flying too low when he was not certain where he was.
It is clear from the cockpit transcripts that at least some on the flight deck knew that they did not know where they were.

July: Barton Springs salamander first described (by UT scientists David Hillis, Andrew Price, and Paul Chippindale in the journal Herpetologica) as distinct species of salamander, Eurycea sosorum; sosorum is the Latin "plural mixed-gender genitive form" of the acronym SOS -- chosen in honor of Austin voters who approved SOS ordinance.
City issues draft report for BCCP, calling SOS ordinance, land acquisitions, and new policies at Zilker Park adequate to protect Barton Springs salamander.
City Council, Travis Co. commissioners, Gov. Ann Richards, and the TNRCC, responding to petitions of several environmental groups, consider requesting federal "outstanding natural resource waters" protections (ONRW) for Barton Creek and Barton Springs.
Imagine if your body type depended on the pile of your carpet.
That’s kind of like the life of the Oklahoma salamander, according to evolutionary biologists Ron Bonett and Paul Chippindale at the University of Texas at Arlington.
The salamanders are born in streams as fish-like larvae.

Soon after the tragedy, Air NZ was backed by a report of then chief air accidents inspector RonChippindale, who said pilot error was the "probable cause", as the DC10 would have flown well clear of the 3795m mountain if it had stayed above a minimum safe altitude of 16,000ft (4876m).
