Ronald William ("Ron") Clarke (born February 21, 1937 in Victoria) was an Australian athlete, and one of the best known middle and long distance runners in the 1960s.
In 1956, when Clarke was still a promising youngster, he was chosen to light the Olympic Flame in the stadium during the opening ceremonies of the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne.
On March 15, 2006, Ron Clarke was one of the final four runners who carried the Queen's Baton around the MCG stadium during the 2006 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Ron Clarke was a Melbourne schoolboy two years older than I. We did not compete against each other, except on an occasional 3000 metres, a cross country or in club competition.
Ron had emerged as a top athlete at the Melbourne Olympic Games when as a world junior record holder he was given the honour of lighting the Olympic flame before 100,000 at the MCG.
At the Mexico Olympics in 1968, Ron was courageous in finishing fifth at high altitude in a race that was later considered dangerous in the heat and humidity of the rarefied atmosphere.

I admit I find it difficult to envisage Ron Clarke as either, and although Ron Jowitt, as the more vertically challenged of the two may at first sight potentially appear to be the role model for Ronnie Corbett, I cannot see him sitting on a low chair dispensing an extended joke to the audience.
Ron Clarke in committee will sometimes appear to be detached, as if contemplating the train times to Chichester, but as a topic of debate slowly reaches an apparently natural conclusion, will tend to make some totally contradictory statement, rather like tossing a lighted match on a pool of petrol to see the effect.
Ron Clarke has assembled and edited an internationally acclaimed series of books on coffee, whilst Ron Jowitt, almost single handedly, edited all the 400 plus papers submitted to ICEF7, produced European sponsored books on the physical properties of foods as well as finding time to found the Journal of Food Engineering.

Former champion athlete Ron Clarke and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation have negotiated a $405,000 settlement of their long-running defamation fight.
The jury, which awarded Mr Clarke $710,700 and the Runaway Bay Centre Pty Ltd $386,250 damages, had been told that a report in November 1999 wrongly suggested that Mr Clarke, 66, was developing a Gold Coast sports centre on a toxic dump.
Mr Clarke and the company sued the ABC and chemical oceanographer Robert Morris, who was featured on the program.
