Gardenhire stood at home plate inches form Hickox's face and berated the umpire, motioning to his face to mimic glasses several times.

Gardenhire has more than tough managing job ahead of him - CBS SportsLine
What figures is that Gardenhire's hiring became official on the same day the Minnesota Vikings forced out head coach Dennis Green, news that is sure to blow the Twins back toward the classified ads in local newspapers, because Gardenhire has been a background player -- albeit a highly skilled one -- for so long.
What should be front-page news, though, is this: Gardenhire's hiring is a triumph over the status quo, a victory for all of those loyal, longtime coaches with bright minds and the patience of Job.
When Gardenhire and Kelly walked into the manager's office together in the Twins' clubhouse on Friday, Gardenhire admitted it was a little odd.

In fact, Gardenhire said Wednesday he didn't want the Twins to trade Lohse during an offseason in which several teams inquired about the right-hander with potential.
Retaining Lohse, Gardenhire said, was a "lifesaver" because it kept the Twins from entering the season with two unproven rookies in their rotation.

My entry earlier this week about Ron Gardenhire's refusal to bench Jacque Jones against left-handed pitching generated a ton of e-mails (as the topic always does), including quite a few that asked exactly who I thought the Twins should replace Jones in the lineup with when facing a lefty.
The fact that Gardenhire doesn't is something I have complained about in the past, which has fallen mostly on deaf ears as the Twins succeeded despite his weaknesses.
Not only has Gardenhire kept him in the lineup against lefties in typical situations, he has refused to bench him in spots like Friday night, with lefty Chris Capuano on the mound and Lew Ford on the bench with the game being played by NL rules.

Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire had a discussion Tuesday with baseball's head disciplinarian, Bob Watson, regarding his postgame tirade about umpire Hunter Wendelstedt.

He did say that while he felt the manager went too far, he considered it Gardenhire's job to stand up for his players and that the situation was very routine.

Minnesota Twins, Major League Baseball - CBS SportsLine.com
The Twins have focused on pitching and defense for years under general manager Terry Ryan, and given their ascent over the past three seasons, it's safe to say their philosophy has worked very well.
With a stable full of either Gold Glovers or potential Gold Glovers, and a pitching staff led by Brad Radke, Joe Mays and, now, Kenny Rogers with Eric Milton out for most of the season, Gardenhire has the luxury of not having to be overly concerned with things such as on-base percentage.
