Goodwin's first film work was for documentary films, and his first feature was Whirlpool in 1958.
Goodwin was also a guest conductor with a number of symphony orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
Goodwin won three Ivor Novello Awards[?], including one for lifetime achievement in 1994.
Goodwin had dreamed of composing for films ever since he saw Albert Lewin's The Picture of Dorian Gray (1945) as a young man. The mainly fl-and-white movie went into colour when the portrait was shown, and Goodwin was particularly impressed by the contribution made to those sequences by the music.

RonGoodwin was then asked to do the score and most of the final film has Goodwin's music, with the exception of some of the spectacular air battle scenes for which Walton's music was retained.
