Ron Goulart's Comic Book Culture Examined
While Goulart claims in his introduction that the book "isn't...about the sort of pictures that hang in art galleries," the fact is that many of these pieces are treasures of the artform, and quite a few qualify as works of art over and above their historical value to comics readers.
Goulart concludes with a look at the True Crime genre that rose to prominence in the early 1950s, a direct precursor to the EC craze that would begin in just a few short months, itself a bridge between the Golden and Silver Ages of comics.
Goulart and his publishers are to be congratulated for creating a terrific tour through the early years of the artform of comics, when any story in any genre was not only possible but could reasonably be hoped to sell hundreds of thousands of copies to eager readers.

 Ron Goulart:  Comic Book Encyclopedia
Ron Goulart's Comic Book Encyclopedia is a lavishly produced, heavily illustrated book with detailed entries on numerous comic book characters (not just superheroes), comic lines, artist and writers.
Goulart provides a detailed look not only of characters, but also of the history of comics, which includes his look at various writers.
It would be nice, however, if Goulart could have given indications of which books and which issues the art samples are taken from near the actual pictures instead of the more general art credits relegated to the back of the book.

Goulart's knowledgeable text complements the covers, and the volume in toto works as both a coffee-table showcase and a history of a publishing phenomenon.
Goulart's history of comics Golden Age, roughly mid Thirties to the late Forties, is adequate though you can read more in his previous book 'Over 50 Years of American Comic Books' but it is the four hundred covers reproduced that I think will interest readers more.
Goulart explains and traces the changes of the comic art form, using his extensive collection as a foundation for examples which are colorful and which celebrate the history of comics.

In Ron Goulart's well received series featuring comedian-cum-amateur sleuth Groucho Marx, Groucho and his writer Frank Denby have made a name for themselves as detectives.
The time is 1939, at which point Groucho no longer looked like the caricature that graces the cover of this novel, and once again Groucho and his writer Frank Denby becoming involved in what proves to be a string of murders.
Jane is the only one Groucho is nice to and that is because she is the smartest one in the book (I sure would like to read that "Hollywood Molly" script).

Ron Goulart, Comic Book Culture: An Illustrated History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Pop culture historian Ron Goulart has long been one of the most prolific and respected authors to chronicle the history of American comic book art.
As Goulart states in his introduction, "This is a book about pictures." It's also a book about the creators of those pictures.
As Goulart states, early comic books were mainly (but not exclusively) comprised of reprints from Sunday newspaper "funny pages." This changed in 1937, when a former U.S. cavalry officer and adventure yarn author Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nelson teamed with pulp magazine publisher Harry Donenfeld and created Detective Comics.

Ron Goulart - Groucho Marx, Master Detective   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Vaudeville trouper, film and musical comedy star, comic quiz-master on radio and TV, Groucho Marx was at one end of the spectrum of the four Marx Brothers: his brother Harpo, at least in character, didn't talk at all and Groucho almost never stopped.
And just as technology sends his antics along to each new generation, Groucho himself now appears in print in a new and unsuspected career through the medium -- the kind of medium that involves table-rapping, that is -- of Ron Goulart's imagination.
With the full concurrence of Groucho Marx Productions, Goulart casts Groucho in a role that suits him beautifully -- he hands him a magnifying glass and sets him up on the hunt for a murderer -- in between bouts of verbal war with the sponsor of his new radio show.

Ron Goulart's fiction is characterized by several themes, notably technology gone wrong (usually through incompetence rather than malice), heroes with superhuman powers, and wicked humor.

Ron Goulart ghost wrote the popular TekWar series of books credited to the actor William Shatner (Shatner is said to have written the outlines for the books, although that is in dispute).

Ron Goulart, a prolific novelist and short-story writer, once before contributed a filmland sleuth to the genre: in the late 1960s and early '70s, he wrote several books featuring John Easy, a Hollywood private eye.
Now, however, the detective is wearing oversized spectacles and greasepaint mustache, and the ease with which Goulart re-creates the period, as well as the man, shows he's had practice.
Puns abound as Goulart teams garrulous Groucho with the comedian's writing partner, Frank Denby, for another Hollywood caper (Groucho Marx, Private Eye, etc.).

Among his pop-culture historical writing, Cheap Thrills: An Informal History of the Pulp Magazines (1972) might still be his most famous book-length work, though his The Hardboiled Dicks: An Anthology And Study of Pulp Detective Fiction (1967) has also been influential.
In addition, he has written scripts for a number of comics including the Star Hawks comic strip he created with artist Gil Kane, as well as the comic book version of TekWar.

The answer is, quite frankly, "No" - but Ron Goulart (one of the world's leading experts on comics) has produced Comic Book Encyclopedia (CBE for short), a nearly 400-page tome that tries to hit the highlights.
And although it doesn't intend to be a comprehensive history of comics, CBE does include an easy-to-follow flowchart, printed on the front and back inside covers, to show the progression of the industry from 1922 to the present.
Overall, Goulart seems to have made wise decisions on where to snip - but it must have been a painful process.

Known to mystery and SF buffs as a novelist and prolific short-story writer, Goulart's natural interest in the genre led him to do comprehensive research on the history of the pulps from 1882 through their demise in the 1950s.
It was followed by dozens more Black Mask, Crimebust ers, etc., that starred the peculiarly American private eye as invented by such masters as Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Erle Stanley Gardner.
Goulart cites as a transitional figure the late John D MacDonald, who wrote prolifically for the pulps before establishing his career as an internationally bestselling novelist.

Groucho Marx made the transition from screen to paper in Ron Goulart's widely acclaimed first novel, Groucho Marx, Master Detective, where he debuted as a radio star--cum--private eye.
With his masterful hand, Goulart evokes the Hollywood of the 1930s just as clearly as it is on the big screen.
He depicts a vast array of colorful characters--gangsters, movie moguls, crooked cops, advertising men, actors, starlets, agents, and especially the wise-cracking gumshoe Groucho, who is, once again, larger than life.
