The Delia Derbyshire production of the Doctor Who theme marked a significant milestone in the nascent field of electronic music (read about the history of the theme at Mark Ayres' website).
This site was created in 2003 (for the 40th anniversary of Doctor Who) to pay tribute to that milestone by providing a forum for the sharing of freely distributable amateur (ie, non-commissioned and non-profit; pros are welcome!) remixes, electronic or acoustic, faithful or pisstakes, of Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire's influential and timeless theme.
Aside from remixes' natural derivation from the original theme, this website is in no way associated with Ron Grainer, the composer of the Doctor Who theme, or the BBC.

Grainer's first crack at musical immortality came in 1963 when he was assigned to write the music for a new science fiction/adventure series entitled Doctor Who.

Grainer was so impressed with Delia Derbyshire's electronic realisation of his score (which remained the standard version of the Doctor Who theme for 18 years) that he is reputed to have said on hearing it, "Did I write that?".
Grainer composed the music for a number of ITC series, including Man in a Suitcase and The Prisoner, the latter based upon an earlier piece of music he had written entitled The Age of Elegance.
Grainer, one of the busiest film and television composers in England of the period, was producing, composing, and arranging the group's work; and their record label, Pye, was enthusiastic about the band's prospects.

A History of the Doctor Who Theme
Grainer had then taken this rhythm track to a session at which he had overdubbed a live orchestra.
Ron Grainer composed the theme on a single sheet of A4 manuscript, and sent it over from his home in Portugal, leaving the Workshop to get on with it.
Delia Derbyshire recalls that Ron Grainer was delighted with the result and, realising that the music worked perfectly well as it stood, abandoned his original plan of overdubbing a small instrumental ensemble (as in Giants of Steam).

Not all "library composers" were, or are, British, and in this connection, I like particularly the movements by the Frenchman Paul Bonneau 'Thierry  Veneaux' (five tracks altogether) and Roger Roger (seven) especially the latter's period pastiches 'Pavane' and 'Lonely Flute'.
Coming now to music actually written for the series, an opening titles theme was commissioned from Ron Grainer, and from those prolific writers Robert Farnon and Wilfred Josephs.
