Joyce was born in Dublin on February 2, 1882, the son of a poverty-stricken civil servant.
Joyce attained international fame with the publication (1922) of Ulysses, a novel, the themes of which are based on Homer's Odyssey.
Joyce further developed the stream-of-consciousness technique in this work as a remarkable means of character portrayal, combining it with the use of mimicry of speech and the parody of literary styles as an overall literary method.

Parnell was an important influence on the young Joyce, and at nine years old, Joyce would write a poem condemning a political ally of Parnell’s whom he felt had betrayed the leader, after an adultery scandal, which ended Parnell’s political career (he died in 1891).
