Ron Shelton - Biography - Moviefone
Through the auspices of Spottiswoode, Shelton was finally able to sell A Player to Be Named Later, which, under the title Bull Durham, was directed by Shelton on a tiny budget in 1988.
Shelton's next project was Blaze (1990), a near-lampoon account of the romance between Louisiana governor Earl Long(Paul Newman) and stripper Blaze Starr (Lola Davidovich).
In 1994, ex-baseballer Shelton came full circle with Cobb, the much awaited biopic of controversial baseball legend Ty Cobb (Tommy Lee Jones); alas, by concentrating only on Cobb's vitriolic final years (and only peripherally on his baseball activities), the film proved a letdown to both Cobb's and Shelton's fans, ending up a box-office loser.

But having invoked the ghost of Ramparts, Shelton abandons it — as he does the notion of a mystery story (because he reveals the killer 15 minutes into the film).
You just wish Shelton had written and directed a movie that was just as sharp.

SPLICEDwire | "Hollywood Homicide" review (2003) Ron Shelton, Harrison Ford, Josh Hartnett
But writer-director Ron Shelton ("Tin Cup," "Bull Durham") -- who wrote this film just after completing his for-hire helming of the genuinely cliché-riddled L.A. cop drama "Dark Blue" -- embraces this ostensible triteness and reshapes it into comedy of the absurd without being conspicuously ironic or self-aware.
As a part-time yoga instructor (Shelton finds a lot of humor in the fact that many police officers have supplemental careers), he sleeps with a lot of his students but can never remember their names.
If you're not tuned in to Shelton's crafty fillet of formula, "Hollywood Homicide" might come off like a weak "Lethal Weapon" rip-off (the inevitable high-speed-chase finale includes a mid-air flip-over car crash, live L.A. traffic-copter TV coverage, and both Ford and Hartnett hijacking vehicles from unsuspecting bystanders).

Ron Shelton could not have painted an uglier portrait if he'd made a movie about Adolf Hitler.
The dynamic Shelton explores between the legendary ballplayer and Al Stump, his harried biographer, is thoroughly engrossing, eliminating the need to rely on re-created old-time footage that might have served as a crutch.
Shelton's adaptation of Stump's book makes Cobb and his biographer more similar than either would like to admit: each exploits the other for his own self-aggrandizing purposes, even if Stump's are sanctioned under the guise of journalism and the slippery quest for "truth." ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

Blogcritics.org: Kurt Russell in Ron Shelton's Dark Blue: Just a Piece
Ron Shelton's Dark Blue opened and shut so fast earlier this year I had a feeling it must be better than the trailer made it look, which was like Training Day (2001) with the races of the good and bad cops reversed.
Russell's big confession scene at the end is, by Shelton's admission in a March 2002 interview with Carlo Cavagna of AboutFilm, crammed with back story because they "couldn't figure out another way to do it".
Shelton's follow-up feature Hollywood Homicide, a ramshackle, casually tossed-off comedy about the LAPD that never expects you to take its melodramatic plot seriously, is the better movie.

Ron Shelton who is known for his sports-related comedies like "White Men Can't Jump" and "Bull Durham" gives a nice effort in his first try at a police drama but the dreary photography and overly talky premise keeps this one from being a real crowd-pleaser.
