Rondeau is renowned for bird life: 323 species have been recorded; 124 have nested in the park and 80% of all species found in Ontario have been seen here, including the rare prothonotary WARBLER.
Thereafter, it was used for naval purposes, exploited for timber, waterfowl, fur bearers and fish and, in the late 1800s, developed for hotels and tourism.

UNUSUAL NESTING HABITATS OF THREE BIRD SPECIES IN RONDEAU PROVINCIAL PARK, ONTARIO
Richard Ussher, in detailing some of the history of the park (Judd and Speirs, 1967:167-169), states that "White-tailed deer have played a prominent part in the recent life of the park" and for a period of 30 years (1912-1942) seedlings of most species of trees and undergrowth were destroyed by deer browsing.
This, of course, opened up most of the understory of the park to such species as the three in question, as did the old sugar roads and the dying of many of the trees in the sloughs.
Many of the larger broad-leaved trees in Rondeau Park, such as beeches, maples, and tulip poplars, are up to four feet in diameter as this portion of the park was never systematically logged.

Multivariate analysis of the understory plant community showed that many species were common to all parks and community types.
Light levels varied widely both within and among parks, and canonical correspondence analysis revealed a clear gradient in species composition associated with light.

The name Rondeau comes from the French, ronde eau, meaning “round water.” The park is aptly named—the long peninsula of park land is divided by only a narrow channel from a second peninsula to form a snug harbor of round water.
The land was first set aside by the British government as Ordinance Land by Lord Simcoe in 1795 and was used as a naval repair station during the War of 1812.
In 1894 Rondeau became the second provincial park in Ontario.
