Ronnie Delany, who won an Olympic gold medal for Ireland in the 1,500 metres in 1956, was nominated for his contribution to Irish athletics and for being an inspiration to other world-class Irish athletes.
The two received the freedom of the city at a ceremony outside the Mansion House on Dawson Street and were presented with scrolls and specially-designed crystal globes.
