 The Death of Ronnie Peterson: What Really Happened at Monza in 1978
Peterson and his Lotus teammate, Mario Andretti, had dominated the 1978 season in their ground-effects Lotus 79s.
The McLaren was spun into Peterson's Lotus and the Lotus was spun into the barriers on the right-hand side of the track, crushing the front of the car.
After a delay of between eleven to eighteen minutes, an ambulance was sent to the accident scene, and Peterson was taken to the Monza medical centre.

tragically, peterson was killed in an accident at monza, italy near the end of the 1978 season, just one race before i witnessed villeneuve's first grand prix victory at the canadian grand prix in montreal.
there is also an interesting connection between peterson, villeneuve and myself that i did not know of until later.

Despite being a quiet man when not racing, Ronnie Peterson was one of Formula One racing's most exuberant characters on the track - famous for the spectacular car control that allowed him to drive the fearsomely fast machines of the day considerably beyond their natural limits.
By 1978 Peterson had rejoined the Lotus team and, with the ultra-competitive ‘ground-effect’ Lotus 79, he and team-mate Mario Andretti were dominating the season.
