  Ronnie Van Zant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ronald Wayne "Ronnie" Van Zant (January 15, 1948 – October 20, 1977) was the lead vocalist, primary lyricist, and a founding member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Van Zant was buried in Orange Park, Florida in 1977, but was relocated to an undisclosed location after vandals broke into his and bandmate Steve Gaines' tombs on June 29, 2000.
Van Zant was married twice, and is survived by two daughters.

Van Zandt played in an early Springsteen band, Steel Mill, in the late '60s before stints on the oldies circuit as a backup guitarist and then with Southside Johnny, with whom he formed the Asbury Jukes.
Van Zandt can't re-create the raucous days of the Stone Pony, but maybe he can start some new traditions.

I was barely 14 when Ronnie Van Zant and three other members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were swiped away in a plane crash at the height of their all too short career.
I've heard rumors; one in particular, that Ronnie had planned to hand the vocals over to Johnny after the conclusion of the Street Survivors tour, so that he could pursue a country music career.
It is for Ronnie, not for commercial purposes.

Skynyrd were an impressive band, (unbelievable piano throughout) and founder/frontman Ronnie Van Zandt had the whole package.
On October 20, 1977, Ronnie, Steve Van Zandt, sister Cassie Gaines and one of the backup singers were killed when their plane ran out of fuel and crashed, ironically, in a swamp in Mississippi.
Founding members Gary Rossington and Alan Collins formed Rossington Collins in 1984, and in 1987 brother Johnny Van Zandt reformed Skynyrd with some of the survivors.

In the years since the widow of lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt took the "New" band to court and it was ruled that if at ANY time there were less than 3 original members of the band then they would be required to change thier name....they have blatantly ignored this for years.
Anyway, Ronnie's widow asked that there be at least three surviving members of the original band, for them to keep the name.
Just because some of the members change, the lead is Ronnie's brother and i think its a good memoriam of his name.
