Ronnie married Judy Seymour in Waycross, Georgia on November 18, 1972.

The Freebird Foundation, Inc. was a non-profit foundation established in honor of Ronnie VanZant, the original singer and songwriter for the Lynyrd Skynyrd band.
Ronnie was killed on October 20, 1977, when Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crashed in woods near McComb, Mississippi enroute to a show in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
