Whelan did the simple things in the game to the highest of standards and mixed in the truly wonderful as well such as his habit of scoring from outside of the box to secure the League Cup.
With the arrival of John Barnes at the start of the 87-88 season Whelan moved to a central midfield role and he loved it.
Whelan had it all but sadly in the nineties he also started getting injuries too which hampered his career.

Whelan was born into a family of footballers; his father, Ronnie Whelan Senior, was an Irish international and a key member of the successful St Patrick's Athletic side of the late 1950's and early 1960's.
Ronnie Junior was a skilful and industrious midfield player, signed for Liverpool from Dublin club Home Farm F.C. (a regular source for talented Irish footballers used by Liverpool) in 1979 and made his debut in 1981, scoring a goal in a win over Stoke City.
Whelan then played a major role in Liverpool's excellent treble of Football League First DivisionLeague title, League Cup and European Cup of 1984, although he was hampered by injury for a portion of this season.

Before long, however, Whelan was knocking on the door of the first team and when an injury to Ray Kennedy provided him with a rare opportunity for a senior outing he didn't disappoint, netting early on in his debut as Stoke were beaten in a Friday night fixture in front of the Kop.

 Was watching Ronnie Whelan interview on RTE1 last night.....
Ronnie stated that lifting the cup that year for Liverpool was the highlight of his career!!!
Ronnie is a legend, especially as he snubbed utd to come to Anfield.
Best Whelan momment for me has to be his detirmination during the 87/88 season to stop the ball that seemed lost on the touchline, put himself in the crowd, come back, beat one man to the ball just in time, beat another and square to Aldo to finish at the far post.
