Ronny Yu is the first one to tell you that he doesn’t know everything when it comes to movie making.
The heroes and heroines in Yu’s cinematic worlds almost always deal with unrequited love, their torment and inner pain literally bursting out in a dizzying mosaic of colors and kaleidoscopic effects.
By far Yu’s masterpiece The Bride with White Hair (1993) is a perfect example of Yu’s imaginative eye toward the poetic and surreal possibilities of the cinema.

Chinese Movie Review | The Trail (1981) Ronny Yu
Despite a handful of modern trappings, including a rather shamefully stolen soundtrack, Yu crafts an incredibly atmospheric slice of uniquely Eastern horror, which is rich with morbid mysticism and stunning visuals.
Yu relies more upon imaginative stalking scenes rather than sudden frights to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats.
Yu also includes a fair amount of action, including a handful of martial arts scenes, though the film as a whole is far more deliberately paced than most of the director's later efforts.

Chinese Movie Review | Fearless (2006) Jet Li, Ronny Yu
Adding to the ensuing storm of publicity was the editing out of around forty minutes, which removed Michelle Yeoh's role entirely, and the fact that the family of Huo Yuanjia publicly voiced their anger at the manner in which the legendary figure has been portrayed in the film.
In this way, it is difficult to see whether the sizable portion of the film which was removed would actually improve matters, as what remains is well paced, and certainly serves the purpose of what is essentially an action packed crowd pleaser rather than a deep and meaningful biopic.
Although much of the narrative is concerned with tragedy and oppression, Yu manages to work in a number of light hearted touches, some of which are quite amusing.

The Bride With White Hair - DVD Review
This period fantasy/horror/romance epic was the start of a very successful collaboration between director Ronny Yu and cinematographer Peter Pau.
Up till this point in his career, Ronny had directed in a number of genres but it was with this breathtaking 1993 production that he really came into his own as a director capable of delivering something of epic proportions (and match Tsui Hark in the visuals department).
Have to mention that Ronny's admiration for Brigitte and Leslie does shine through and it's interesting to hear him talk about favoring quiet moments (because of their strong presence) rather than dialogue.

SPLICEDwire | "Freddy vs. Jason" review (2003) Ronny Yu, Robert Englund, Ken Kirzinger
But even when handed this golden B-movie premise and several interesting twists (all the kids who knew about Freddy are locked up in an asylum where Jason pays a visit), director Ronnie Yu ("Bride of Chucky") stubbornly refuses to steer away from formula or patch up plot holes.
So Yu cranks up the heavy metal soundtrack and his killers cut loose, as the inevitable virginal heroine (Monica Keena, "Dawson's Creek") and her dwindling number of friends seek a way to stop them -- often with unintentionally laugh-inducing lines of dialogue like, "Wait!
The two franchise anti-heroes are finally pitted against each other when Jason gets off his leash and starts killing too many victims before Freddy has a chance to slay them in their slumber.

The raver chick with the big-titted body double also did a decent job, and oh yeah, before I forget...thanks to the filmmakers for finally putting some actual TandA back into horror movies...phew, I thought we'd lost them forever.
I was, however, expecting a lot more style from director Yu, who I thought did a brilliant job with BRIDE OF CHUCKY, but seemed to rely a little too much on one specific "strobe" camera effect here and didn't generate the greatest of energy.

New Line convinced Hong Kong director Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky) to helm the project (Yu subsequently decided to hire stuntman Ken Kirzinger to take over the role of Jason from Kane Hodder, angering pimply faced fanboys across the globe.
As I understand it, this is due in part to Ronny Yu's decision to keep the film as fast-paced as possible and to the studio's desire to draw in a new generation of fans.
Still, it's hard not to cringe when the characters explain nearly everything that is happenning on screen to each other (or in other words, to the audience).
