  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Rooikat AFV
The Rooikat is a wheeled armored fighting vehicle built in South Africa for the South African Army.
The Rooikat is not a pure reconnaissance vehicle, but rather its role was envisaged as the fighting core of the deep penetration units of the South African Army.
The Rooikat's 105mm gun does not have a muzzle brake and so avoids the unpleasant aspects that brings up for accompanying infantry (blast, obscuration due to dust kick-up, etc.) The Rooikat 105 provides superior strategic, operational and tactical mobility characteristics which are achieved through the fully independent trailing arm suspension.

Shirrush RE: Rooikat 105 5/3/2004 11:24:36 AM Sorry, you're right, I was refering to the Rooikat 105 - link -, and it's made by Alvis OMC, not by Denel.
To my knowledge, this is the only wheeled AFV to currently employ this system.
I personally think the skid steering system was not a big success, as it would limit the vechicle's maneuverability, in comparision to a traced AFV, in heavy, muddy terrain, this may be why the only foreign sales of the AMX-10RC were to Qatar and Morocco.

I’d take a RSA Rooikat before I took an AMX P.O.S. Even though a kat can’t swim, it is a hell of a lot more surivivable in combat.
At least a kat’s frontal armor is made to withstand a 24mm shell and it is hardened against a TM46 antitank mine.
If I had to draft some guidelines for an AFV, I assume one of the first items would be to decide on the level of protection.

 South African Rooikat's 76mm anti-material gun: sufficient?
South Africa exports their Rooikat AFV with a 105mm anti-tank gun, but internally they use a 76mm anti-material gun for the added ammunition capacity (about 2.5x as many 76mm rounds can be stacked in a given volume as 105mm rounds).
The thought is that the Rooikat's intended targets would be unhardened logistic assets, so 76mm would be plenty, and having more ammo would mean blowing up more targets.
The Scorpion's intended mission is different from Rooikat's, though (infantry overwatch), and I'm willing to believe that a gun insufficient for overwatch might be sufficient for the anti-material role.

For the future there is more likely to be more conflicts happening in urban terrian as the worlds population and towns and cities grow.
The ability of the MBT and heavy IFV to operate to their maximum will be degraded as the close nature of cities negates the effectivness of their long weapon range coupled with the fact that an urban setting crawling with hostiles armed with AT weapons will not be a nice place for any AFV.
Maintenance is a biggy and I've heard that LAV maintenance is a fraction of that of a similar tracked AFV, maybe even 1/10th the cost.
