No Room at the Top - 3/28/2005 - Publishers Weekly
The operative word for nonfiction is platform—authors need to be famous in another field; they need to be experts in the subject they are writing on; they need access to the media or, even better, to be the media.
Books by two pastors are among the top 15—Warren, of course, and Joel Osteen, whose Your Best Life Now has sold close to 975,000 copies and is still high on the weekly charts.
He's an author with a very substantial platform—he's pastor of Lakewood Church in Houston, Tex., the largest church in America, with more than 25,000 people attending each weekend; and his syndicated weekly TV broadcast was rated by Nielsen Media Research as the #1 inspirational program nationally.

 Room at the Top (1958)
Room at the Top was adapted from John Braine's first novel, about an ambitious young man in a local government office in a large and bleak northern town who makes a set for a wealthy industrialist's daughter, and when thwarted turns to in older married woman.
The character of Joe Lampton is ambivalent, bitter, his social animus perhaps deriving from a slum childhood and a war spent mostly in a prison camp, but driven forward by a kind of confident, day-dreaming quality, a refusal to admit the impossible.
His eventual translation from the cobblestones of the lower end of the town to the tudorized gables at the top is meant to show his sublimation of life's values to ambition.

Room at the Top / Jack Clayton / 1959 / film review
One of the earliest and best of the realistic English "kitchen sink" dramas which reflected changing social attitudes in the late 1950s/early 1960s, Room as the Top is a powerful indictment of the class system in post-war England, yet it is also a heart-rending tale of romance and self-fulfilment.
With its dry cynicism, impassioned performances and abrupt assault on the class system, to say nothing of its sexual explicitness (which earned the film an X certificate), Room at the Top was a much needed break of fresh air, a shocking film, but also one that is profoundly moving.
The destructive nature and double-standards of a morally bereft class system are exposed with passion and perspicacity, reflected as much in the stirring conscience of Joe Lampton as in the sickening behaviour of the elite whose ranks he aspires to join.
